This is WIANEWS for week commencing March 23 2008

 NATIONAL NEWS

With no news this week from the WIA it gives us a great opportunity to have a
look at Radio Past. Later we will be joined by VK5BUI John Williams, who will
look at the passing of one of our pioneers, who in turn, was the Son of a
Radio Pioneer, the man who started Radio 2EU, which morphed into 2UE.

The find of the Century, the remains of HMAS Sydney prompted a reminder from
Jim Linton on a radio date, March 25, when we should tune the bands for a
station operating from the USS Missouri. She is famous for being the last
battleship in service with a navy anywhere in the world having served in all
major conflicts the USA has been involved in from World War II through to
 Gulf War 1.

And the death this week of Arthur C. Clarke science fiction writer who's
thought process saw the world wide web satellites and all this back in the
 1940's!

Several years back, he spoke with Nalaka Gunawardene of wiredmag.com on the
after effects of the Asian Tsunami.

Sir Arthur said it was about 60 years since he conceived the communications
satellite ( Wireless World, October 1945), and the WWW and video cameras.

On that fateful day, hundreds of holidaymakers captured images of the tsunami
using their handheld video cameras, making this probably the most widely
 filmed natural disaster in history.

TV networks and professionals arrived at the scene hours later -- and had to
"borrow" amateur footage to tell the story.

And when electricity and telephones -- both fixed and mobile -- failed in the
worst-affected areas, amateur radio enthusiasts restored the first
communication links with the outside world. Courageous and resourceful radio
hams were at the forefront of relief efforts in the Andaman and Nicobar
Islands off the coast of India, Hambantota in Sri Lanka, and many other
 locations.

We might never know how many lives they saved and how many minds they put
at ease, but we owe a debt to Marconi's faithful followers.

As Victor Goonetilleke, president of the Radio Society of Sri Lanka, remarked,
"When all else is dead, shortwave is alive."

Arthur C Clarke went on to say "As Asian scientists and governments scramble
to set up systems to monitor and warn of future disasters, they should take
the widest possible view, including what science fiction has cautioned about.
Let us keep an eye on the skies even as we worry about the next hazard
 from the depths."

Nalaka Gunawardene for his support in writing this essay. Write to
 rants@wiredmag.com.

 EARTH HOUR

Next Saturday, March 29 at your local 8am - 9am is when all lights and
appliances are to be shut off. We now remind clubs and repeater operators
that even solar systems should be disabled for the hour, not just home
 transceivers.

Earth hour was held in VK2 for the first time last year and in Sydney alone,
according to the Earth Hour Web Site, this short 60 minutes reduced Sydney's
energy consumption by some 10.2%, the equivalent of taking some 48,000 cars
off the road for 12 MONTHS!!!

Radio hams tune into lottery grant

A UNIQUE hobby group for radio enthusiasts has secured a grant of more than
 £5,000.

The Worcester Radio Amateurs Association (WRAA), established in October 2006,
is celebrating after being given £5,320 from the National Lottery Awards for
All scheme. The group, the only amateur radio enthusiast organisation in the
Worcestershire area, will use the cash to spread its wings into neighbouring
 towns.

"We are keen to promote amateur radio as a life-long hobby," said club
chairman Pete Badham, adding that all members were "absolutely chuffed" with
 the grant.

"We want to show everyone just what radio means in today's world, where many
technical advances are taken for granted. The money means we can move forward.
We are now solvent enough to take it to the next stage - we can offer the
training to people outside the club and go out into more schools."

As well as regular meetings at their radio shack' in Hallow, the club works
closely with the Scouts and Guides, teaching youngsters how to use radio
 communication while camping.

In 2007, the club took part in the Scouting movement's centenary celebrations.
Members set up a radio station which enabled several hundred Scouts to take
the Scout promise whilst the whole world listened.

The Rover Scouts are running an activity for Venturer Scout over this
 Easter Weekend.

It was to be in the Kuitpo Forest area, but due to the "lovely warm weather"
over in SA, it has been decided it would be too risky having Scouts in a pine
forest in case of a bush fire.

So the Easter Venture is being run from Woodhouse (The Scout Campgrounds in the
Adelaide Hills) with events running in the city and down at Glenelg where the
Scout Activities Section have a great hall.

Scout Radio Activities Group (SRAG which has mostly Hams as members) will be
handling the all the communications under the capable leadership of Sam VK5KSA.

The Darwin amateur radio club entered the john Moyle with a station at
Adelaide river railway station about 100 km radial from Darwin.

The Sidney Williams hut, set out as a railway museum was a great shelter
from the sun, rain and big thunderstorms. Some entrants were heard grumbling
about noise on 40m, we were surrounded by big storms at 5 to 20 km radius for
 hours.

I can assure you it wasn’t a nice hear, DSP or no DSP. 80m was unworkable.

 We tried.

Wet string dummy loads seem to be the order for some. Such were signal
strength variations of stations in similar locations.

The next exam date for those aspiring candidates for either a Foundation
license, or those that wish to attempt or upgrade to Standard or Advanced
will be on the 19th April.

Anyone interested should e-mail Andrew at vk8ah@arrl.net to register their
 interest.

Club access has changed with the implementation of a new security system
through the efforts of the Station Manager, Richie VK8RR. The intent of the
new system is to allow greater access to club members who may wish to use
the station outside regular meetings and broadcast times.

The repeater-linking project continues to evolve. At the last club meeting,
El Presidente Andrew VK8AH presented the current and suggested direction for
the repeater-linking project. The project’s design goals are to provide good
handheld access across the Darwin, Casuarina, Palmerston and rural areas.

This will be a great boost not only to members, but to those visiting Darwin
and have been challenged in accessing the repeaters from hotel rooms or
caravan parks. The hope will be to have the network in operation for the next
influx of visitors for the dry season. We thank WICEN NT and Trevor VK8CO
for their support in providing supporting equipment given the very obvious
emergency benefits of such a network.

 INTERNATIONAL NEWS

 NEWS FROM ARNEWSLINE

 VISUALLY HANDICAPPED EMMCOMS SYSTEM DEVELOPED

Turning to the new technology page, researchers at Georgia Tech's Wireless
Rehabilitation Engineering Research Centre say that they have received good
 news.

This, regarding initial testing of their newly developed Wireless Emergency
Communications or W-E-C project for the visually handicapped. Results
indicate 94 percent of blind and visually impaired test subjects found
W-E-C to be a significant improvement over their current methods of receiving
 emergency alerts.

This first field test involved participants from the Georgia Radio Reading
Service in a full-day study to engage the effectiveness and accessibility of
this prototype emergency alerting system. Subjects ranged from
sight-enhanced individuals to those who are fully blind. Additionally, the
test subjects' level of familiarity and use of wireless technologies ranged
from technically savvy to infrequent users.

WEC tested custom software that runs on a Windows Mobile OS, designed to send
accessible emergency alerts to short message service capable handsets.

The custom software then presented the content of the text alert in an audio
format. During the test engineers simulated the emergency alerts, employing
the Common Alerting Protocol, as if they originated from the National Weather
Service. The mobile phones used had the capability to recognize an incoming
alert of critical importance and override any muted sound or vibration settings
to ensure that the critical alarm was delivered.

Some 18 percent of Americans are thought to have some type of disability, and
that an estimated 60 percent of Americans use wireless services.

The advantage of accessible emergency communications software and devices
like this is that they can reach the user, no matter what their activity or
location, with lifesaving information. Once fully functional, it could also
assist blind hams involved in Emergency Communications work as well.

HAM RADIO IN SPACE: ARISS TRAINING PLANNED FOR THREE NEW ASTRO-HAMS

Amateur Radio on the International Space Station training sessions are being
planned for astronauts Nicole Stott, KE5GJN, Sandy Magnus, KE5FYE, and Bob
Thirsk, VA3CSA. Magnus is expected to be a crewmember of Expedition 17 and
18, flying to the ISS on STS-126 in September. Stott, a member of the
Expedition 19 crew, will fly on STS-128 in May 2009. Thirsk, a CSA astronaut
will follow the same month on a Soyuz flight.

NEW ZEALAND: NZART CLOSES MEMBERSHIP E-MAIL REFLECTORS TO AVOID LITIGATION

The national society of New Zealand, the NZART has announced the closure of
its Internet reflectors.. This means that all remailers formerly open to
members are being permanently shut down.

The reason given in the Match 5th notice indicates that the action came about
to keep the NZART from becoming embroiled in some future litigation. This,
in case someone posted something another ham did not like and the matter went
 to court.

The only NZART e-mail reflectors that will continue to operate are those for
internal use not open to the general membership. These include the Council
only, HQ plus Council only, the Officers only and the ARE-C reflectors. All
the other NZART sponsored reflectors closed indefinitely effective at 9 p.m.
New Zealand time on Friday 7 March 2008. Only more proof that we live in a
 truly litigious world.

 WEIRD N WONDERFUL

TWINS ARRESTED IN CA COPPER THEFT

A first break in the cases of the ongoing copper thefts that have been
plaguing telecommunications providers ion the South-West. This with word
that twin brothers and a juvenile have been arrested in connection with a
series of thefts of copper wire in California. Jim Damron, N8TMW, has more:

An under cover investigation by the city of Lancaster's Sheriff's Station
began after a report was filed by Verizon that $40,000 worth of copper wire
had been stolen. The investigation in a sparsely populated area lasted
 nearly 50 hours.

Three suspects were taken into custody who were linked to four thefts of
copper from Verizon over two weeks.

The suspects reportedly climbed utility poles to cut the wire down and it was
taken to recycling facilities where it was sold for between $1.80 and $2.50 a
pound. Authorities a believe that the three suspects may be linked to at
least a dozen similar thefts cross the region.

For the Amateur Radio Newsline, I'm Jim Damron, N8TMW, reporting.

With the price of copper soaring due to demand in overseas markets the theft of
wire especially the south-west has become a major issue here in the United
States Its also one of the reasons you are paying o much for coax and rotor cable
 these days.

[The South Australian Police have even setup a dedicated group of
police who target copper thefts. Plumbing, hot water services and
house wiring are commonly stolen items. They have become so brazen
they steal the copper from earth mats in electricity substations. God
help them if there is a fault condition when they're removing the mat – Ed]

From time to time we have made mention of Pirate Radio stations in the UK
being shut down by their agency "OFCOM".

In England these pirate/privateers just seem to pop back up within hours
 of closure.

Take for example RUDE 88.2 FM Islington.

This was one of two illegal broadcasters shut down in a council-backed
 operation by communications regulator Ofcom.

But less than 48 hours after having its transmitter dismantled, Rude was back
on the dial and broadcasting on its illegal FM waveband in a swift turnaround
which Ofcom admitted was "not unusual".

A DJ with pirate radio experience, who asked not to be named, said:
"It doesn't matter how many times they try and lock stations down, they'll be
back on air within days. DJs pay a weekly subscription to their stations so
there's always a pot of money to replace any equipment that gets impounded.

Seven well-established pirate radio stations are known to operate in
Islington, often broadcasting from tower blocks by feeding their transmitters
 into the electricity supply.

TEXAS TO HOST USA'S ARDF CHAMPIONSHIPS

Bastrop State Park in Central Texas will be the site for this year's USA
championship of on-foot hidden transmitter hunting. Fans of this
international sport -- also called foxhunting or Amateur Radio Direction
Finding (ARDF) -- are making travel plans now.

Interest and participation in ARDF has been growing every year since
stateside hams first competed at the World Championships in 1998.

Beginning in 2001, there has been an annual national championship to see
who is best at the sport and to select team members for the World
Championships. The Texas ARDF group and the Houston Orienteering Club
are combining to host this year's events, to be held the second weekend
 of May.

Previous USA championships have drawn experts from China, the Czech Republic,
 England, Germany, Hungary and Australia.

REWIND - A LOOK BACK IN HISTORY
(Will McGhie VK6UU is WIA National Historian)

 Son of 2EU passes on

Last week the passing of a great radio man largely went unnoticed from the
day to day hustle and bustle of the radio industry. Not surprising really,
because this 94 year old mild mannered, gentle man had not been a part of
the radio scene for some time.

David Rogerson writing in RadioInfo dot com dot au has paid tribute to
 Norm Stevenson.

Norm Stevenson's father pioneered what we now know today as 2UE, in Sydney.

He was the son of C.V. or 'Pa' Stevenson as he was known, owner of Electrical
Services. It was from the living room of Norman's father's home in
Everett Street, Maroubra on January 26th, 1925 that Radio 2EU ( or 2UE as it
was later to be know) became the first commercial radio station in Australia.

Norman's dad owned an electrical business in George Street, Sydney known as
Electrical Utilities ( the EU in 2UE). In order to relieve the silences and
long pauses in the recital of pianola music and other recorded programs, from
8pm to 10pm, a local butcher Harry Woods from George Street Sydney, paid
"Pa" Stevenson one shilling for each advertisement Pa featured.

Norman was a share holder in Radio 2UE from the beginning, and a young one at
 that.

Norm was very gentle and a cheery, quietly spoken man. He loved radio, but
never had a great desire to be involved in the trenches of day to day
operations. Tennis was a love of his, as was generally making the lives of
those family, friends and employees around him a whole lot better.

One person who worked closely with Norm Stevenson, former 2UE executive
Tom Crozier recalls Norman Stevenson was that rare sort of person - a
gentleman in every way. Never acting like the shareholder he was,
never aspiring to an executive role in the company like his brother
Murray Stephenson, who was Chief Engineer and a brilliant one at that.

2EU / 2UE A Family Affair, the poorer with the passing of Norm Stevenson.
