Redcliffe and District Radio Club
Well it is all over for another year and with in excess of 1200 contacts on
all HF bands on both phone and CW, Club members are exhausted after a fun
weekend in the bush on the John Moyle Field Day.
Just before the start of the field day competition, Peter, VK4TGV, launched a
large helium balloon to support a quarter wave ground plane antenna on
160 metres but sadly the balloon became snagged in a large gum tree and burst.
Disappointed he launched another balloon and this time success!
With contacts made to VK2, VK3 and VK5 the antenna certainly proved itself.
Many members had read about this type of antenna but to actually see it in
operation, all were amazed.
The club also used the new 20, 15 and 10 metre antennas with outstanding
results and the members and visitors who assisted with the set up of the site
were amazed at the simplicity of construction and ease of setting up the
antenna without any complex tuning.
The highlight of the weekend was the camp roast on Saturday night when 43
members, guests and family members join in to the delicious food cooked in
6 large camp ovens.
It was disappointing that the ocean trawlers were not able to bring in the
prawns and bugs for Friday night’s tea but T-Bone steaks, large pieces of
rump, sausages and other Bar-B-Que food was the order of the day. The food
was washed down with the appropriate amber fluid and other suitable cold
drinks and good fellowship was enjoyed by all.
The club wishes to thank the visitors who assisted especially with the CW
operation of the field day and all those club members who assisted either at
the campsite or in the background to make the field day a great success.
And many thanks to Barry for the hot showers on Friday and Saturday night,
they were just the thing to ease tired limbs.
A full story of the weekend is being collated and prepared for the AR magazine.
Photos of the weekend will be on the club website shortly.

theTARCinc was active last weekend during the
John Moyle Field Day Contest with VK4WIT
operated portable on several bands from Bluewater Scout Den.
The primary power source was 12V batteries at all 5 stations
on the site to keep the RF ambient noise floor low to enhance
receive conditions with the occasional top up of the batteries
by portable generator or solar panel.
A mini monster auction was also held at the site during the
weekend with the most popular items being vintage valve receivers.
Highlights of the weekend included Blue Collins, who is studying
for the Foundation Assessment, making a number of contacts on 80metres
and many contacts on different bands with John Moyle Field Day
National Contest Manager Denis VK4AIG/VK3ZUX who found a magic
portable spot on top of Herveys Range which allowed him to not only
make a few checklog HF contacts but also do a number of VHF and
UHF DX contacts.
All in all a great weekend playing radios in the bush, seeing what
fell over in the field and finding out new things to incorporate in the
next portable station.
