This weekend being the special "Radio Announcers" who are also hams edition
of WIA National News is missing one "voice" we were super keen on hearing
from again, that being Barry VK7FR
Some will remember that former ABC announcer Barry VK7FR suffered a minor
stroke several weeks ago, spending much of the time since in rehabilitation.
We are pleased to learn that Barry has made very good progress and has
finally been allowed home, permanently!
His progress has been very good and we hope it is not too much longer before
his distinctive golden voice is heard on the amateur airwaves.
Not only are we using Announcers, but we are "taking back the streets".
Radio (or the wireless) as we know it today DID evolve from radio amateurs
so this weeks news forms the cenre piece of a special broadcast on TAB+ a
digital channel in Brisbane. Featuring the news of course but also heaps
and heaps of music with a radio/communication theme.
ABBAS SOS... we gave both CQ Serenade and CQ Boohie, there's
Slim Dusty dot com anf "Grand-dad was a telegraphist, the tracks from
"The Ham Band" (Google that one it's well worth a surf".. and what radio
show would be worth it's salt without COMMERCIALS! Yes plenty of plugs on how
to become a ham and the WIA-BOOK SHOP.
So if you are in Brisbane, look for TAB+ or if (shame shame) you have yet
to purchase a digital radio visit your local electronics store and ask them
about Digital Radio!
Brisbane area clubs listen up!
Here is a REAL opportunity to meet with an Amateur Radio Dignatory.
VU2RBI Mrs Bharathi Chief Co-ordinator of India's National Institute
of Amateur Radio will be visiting the City November 30 - December 7.
Bharathi can tell some interesting stories especially regarding her
inaugural VU4 DXpedition in 2004 that had the earthquake & subsequent
tsunami. Bharathi changed over to being the only emergency comms in/out
of the islands & hence Amateur Radio now is regarded highly by the
highest powers in India.

32 WIA affiliated clubs have so far registered for the commemorative
callsign roster. There are 19 three-day slots still available.
The wide range of activities notified by clubs include the International
Museum Weekend, JOTA, Royal Show, an historic theme park, the VHF/UHF
field day, contests and more.
The WIA Centenary Committee encourages all clubs, who have not already done
so, to firm up the details of their planned activities wherever possible
in the next few weeks and put these on the WIA website.
Interesting to note the use of it in association with the field day as ACMA
Rules state that
"A club using the callsign VK100WIA may not participate in any contest
or submit any log (including a check log) for any contest or apply for
any award or participate in IOTA, engage in fox hunts or the like under
that callsign".
ARISS CELEBRATES ITS 500th SCHOOL ROOM CONTACT THANKS TO VK4
A Ham Radio telebridge station situated in Queensland was swung into
action to help the 500th ARISS classroom to space station contact!
I-S-S Commander Frank De Winne, ON1DWN answered questions from students at
the new Copernic Science Center in Warsaw, Poland.
This was the 500th school contact since ARISS began operations in 2000.
And whilst "in space".. AMSAT-Argentina reports that its LUSAT-1,
ham radio satellite has stopped transmitting CW telemetry on 437.125 MHz.
AMSAT-Argentina says that it hopes to revive LUSAT to allow it to celebrate
its 20 years in space next January 23. It also adds that it welcomes any
reception reports of the now out of communications ham radio bird.
RadioComms Connect Conference
RadioComms Connect returns to Melbourne 18-19 November for the third year.
40+ exhibitors and a panel of expert speakers along with the annual
radio communications industry gala dinner.
The conference program includes presentations from experts on the
digital dividend, IP-based technology, communications for transport
and spectrum management.
There are eight overseas speakers in the line-up of 28, including the
chairman of the International TETRA Association, Phil Godfrey, and
Sir Chris Fox, former president of the Association of Chief Police Officers,
UK.
A continuing problem facing two-way radio is the shortage of qualified
RF engineers and technicians who can service and set up the modern
analogue/digital two-way. In a bid to alleviate this critical situation,
RMIT University will outline its thoughts on the current state of play
in its presentation, '2015 and beyond - Are you ready to converge?
Vocational upskilling to meet new technology demands in the
radio communications industry'.

From the ARVictoria twitter service we learn that VK is set to tackle
e-waste.
e-waste?
e-waste, such as computers, monitors and TV sets, is expected to be in
force begin from 2011 and the program will require manufacturers and
importers of electronic equipment to have membership of a
Government-accredited Producer Responsibility Organisation.
The first products to be regulated under the new system will be computers
and TV sets, with predictions that 80% of that material will be recycled by
2021.
It is expected that we householders will be able to drop off used computers
and TVs for recycling free of charge.
Is this a welcome end to ham radio boot sales and pre loved junk sales?
One can only hope! hihi.

AN APPLE FOR THE TEACHER?
Not quite but Uruguay has become the first country in the world to provide
a laptop computer for every child attending a state primary school.
The last school and pupils received theirs at a presentation by that
country's President in Montevideo.
Uruguay is part of the "One Laptop Per Child" scheme, an organisation set up
by internet pioneer Nicholas Negroponte.
Oh and the cost? Would you believe LESS than 5% of the country's education
budget!
There are plans to extend the scheme to secondary schools and pre-school
children next year.
And still with an internet theme, “FINSö AREN'T WHAT THEY USED TO BE.
From July 2010, all Finnish citizens are to be granted the right to a
broadband internet connection.
From that date, Finnish telecommunications companies will be compelled to
offer all 5.2 million Finns Internet connections of at least one megabit
per second. By 2015, the connections must be 100 times faster.
The new act is also intended to ensure that even the country’s remotest
regions are connected to the World Wide Web.
Finland is now one of the countries with the best Internet access in the
world. At least 95 percent of all Finns have an Internet connection.
The Finnish government believes a broadband Internet connection is a vital
component of a modern society.

Amateur Wins Nobel Prize
Radio Amateur George Smith, AA2EJ, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics
for the invention of an imaging semiconductor circuit - the CCD sensor.
aa2ej shares the prize money with two other's Charles K. Kao, of
Standard Telecommunication Laboratories and Willard S. Boyle, of
Bell Laboratories.

In a survey in England out of 50,000 votes cast, one in five people have
voted the X-ray machine as the invention having the greatest impact on
past and present contenders, ahead of the Apollo 10 space capsule and
Stephenson's Rocket.
Ten of the most significant objects in science, engineering, technology and
medicine were selected for the vote. The results were:

WA6ITF RETIRES FROM FOX TV AFTER 30 YEARS
From Los Angeles comes word that our good friend and Amateur Radio
Newsline producer Bill Pasternak, WA6ITF, has retired from Fox Television
after a career that spanned close to three decades at the networks flagship
station KTTV.
He started in 1980 as a technician, over the years he did just about
every job one finds at a television station. He says that the last 12
years working as the engineering contact with the news department have been
the ones he has enjoyed the most. There he's not only worked the technical
side but also has been on the air several times as an expert on all things
electronic and radio communications for news stories.
Pictures of his surprise retirement party put on by his many friends at
KTTV are on Bill's photo album page on the Facebook Social Networking
service. Look for his album under the name Bill Pasternak +titled Saying
Goodbye to KTTV after Almost 30 years.
A NEW BACAR TO BE DEMONSTRATED
Saturday 21 November ZS6EF, will demonstrate the 2010 version of BACAR
(Balloon Carrying Amateur Radio) at the National Amateur Radio centre in
South Africa.
Its maiden flight in the Western Cape will be on Sunday 24 January 2010.
NEXT Saturday BACAR will be demonstrated on a tethered launch.
Radio Amateurs from around the globe will be able to follow it on the Web.

TWO HAMS CREDITED WITH SAVING A LIFE!
Karl, KI6PCW, and wife Deborah, KJ6CRZ, put their ham radio emergency
training to use to help rescue an unidentified man after an accident on
Catalina Island who had fallen more than 40 feet onto rocks below.
The ham couple had climbed a hill on Catalina Island to check out a
repeater when they found a 61-year-old man bleeding and moaning.
Tso and Ava had their hand-held radios with them. They used the equipment
to make contact with other radio amateurs on the California mainland, who
called 911 to report the emergency. Los Angeles County fire-fighter
paramedics responded and the injured man was quickly flown by medevac
helicopter to St Mary's Hospital in Long Beach for treatment.
Gadget problems divide the sexes
OM's and YL's have different approaches to dealing with technology problems,
according to a gadget helpline.
64% of its male callers and 24% of its female callers had not read the
instruction manual FIRST.
Gadget Helpline, surveyed 75,000 calls received between 25 September and
23 October. Women spent 32% longer on the phone to their helpers than men.
In general terms men treat technology as something to be understood and
conquered while women are more motivated by appliances that benefit them.
Getting gadgets to communicate with each other was the subject of possibly
the largest number of requests for help.

GAREC-2010 TO BE HELD IN OCTOBER 2010 IN CURACO
GAREC-2010, the next Global Amateur Radio Emergency Communications
Conference it will take place next fall in Curaco. The dates will be
October 11th and 12th 2010 with the theme of the meeting to be

Spectacles that can provide subtitles have been created by hi-tech firm NEC.
Resembling glasses but lacking lenses, the headset uses a tiny projector to
display images on a user's retina.
NEC said it planned a version that used real-time translation to provide
subtitles for a conversation between people lacking a common language.

WEIRD AND WONDERFUL
China is planning to hold a 16 event robot Olympics in 2010.
Yes ROBOTS will compete in familiar Olympic sports such as athletics
as well as those more suited to machines such as cleaning.
Entry to the competition will be restricted to robots resembling humans.
They must possess two arms and legs. Wheels are banned.
The Chinese event will face competition from the RoboGames that also stages
sports events for robots. The 2010 RoboGames will take in California in
April.
Robots already have their own world cup. The 2009 competition saw entries
from 400 teams that hailed from 35 separate nations.
The 2010 event will be held in June in Singapore.
A rival event is run by the Federation of International Robot-Soccer
Associations.
The Chinese robot games will be one among an increasingly crowded calendar
for robot sports and other competitive events. One event, Roboexotica,
is for robots that can mix cocktails, light cigarettes and chat with
bar patrons.
No word that Robot-Exotica will feature energiser "bunnies" as hostesses.

hard to put out a decent signal on HF. He also says that in the QSL area
that he is in the process of designing them, and they should be good and
ready to begin sending them out in the spring of 2010.
JK2VOC says that he will be active from BA4TB station in China. This,
between November 27th to the 30th including the CQ World Wide DX CW Contest
on November 28th and 29th. QSL via JK2VOC.
YV5IAL will be portable CE0 from Easter Island between January 8th
and 11th of 2010. This will be a QRP, portable, holiday style operation.
Activity will use the PSK31 digital mode on 14070.15 kHz from 2200 to 0100
UTC daily. He may occasionally be on 40, 30 and 15 meters as well. QSL via
this operation via YV5IAL.
Santa's amateur radio station
Once again Santa's own amateur radio station OH9SCL will be active from
Santa Claus Land in the Arctic Circle during December.
Activity will be on 160-10 meters using CW, SSB and the Digital modes.

AWARDS
WONDERFUL ACHIEVEMENT BY ZS4JAN
During the past month Jan Botha, ZS4JAN, made a wonderful achievement by
achieving the WAZS 1000 award of the South African Radio League.
It means that Jan made 1000 confirmed contacts with individual call signs
in South Africa.
It took Jan almost 6 years to reach this milestone.
What makes this achievement more unique is the fact that Jan is the first
amateur to gain the WAZS 1000 award!

service over a number of years. Arusu steps down from that position
from 1st Jan 2010.

his very extensive knowledge to the new incumbent so that a smooth
transition will evolve.

IRMA FRAUSTO HAS COMPANY IN THE UK
You probably remember the story of Irma Frausto of Compton, California that
we reported on a few weeks ago. Her amplified TV antenna allegedly
self-oscillated on 840 MHz and caused interfere to a cell site. The FCC
sent her a Citation even though there was nothing in the Commission's write
up to suggest that she knew about the self-oscillations or had the
wherewithal to eliminate them.
Well now Irma has company. A 12 year old schoolboy in Great Britain by the
name of Nickie Chamberlain has been busted because his self- oscillating TV
antenna was interfering with air traffic over his home in Linslade, Beds in
the UK. The Ofcom engineer ordered the father to dispose of the aerial
immediately.
Air traffic controllers first noticed the communication problems on the
flight path into London Luton Airport on October 6th .According to Ofcom,
pilots coming into land at the airport were loosing contact with the
control tower because the faulty antenna preamp was transmitting on the
same frequency as the aircraft radios.

An off-air Low Power FM (LPFM) transmission audit
New Zealand Radio Inspectors recently visited the Dargaville area to track
and assess the source of a previously unaudited Low Power FM (LPFM)
transmission.
Because the signal appeared stronger than expected, and an off-air audit
does not require the assistance of the licensee, signal strength measurement
was promptly commenced.
After correction for all factors, the measured field strength was calculated
indicating the output of the transmitter was slightly over 10 Watts e.i.r.p.
As the transmitter was not operating in accordance with the licence
conditions, an infringement fine was issued to the company responsible.

USA HAMS GIVEN $165,000 TO BUILD D-STAR RESCUE RADIO NETWORK
Its one of the largest government grants ever given to ham radio emergency
communications. This as $165,000 in Federal funding has been secured by
Georgia Emergency Management Agency to complete a statewide D-Star based
ham radio emergency communications network.
Mark Fehlig, WA6NGC former director of Engineering for the state's Public
Broadcasting System. When the opportunity arose to install two amateur radio
antennas on each of nine television towers providing statewide coverage,
WA6NGC jumped into action and designated Georgia's Amateur Radio Emergency
Service to control the use of those sites for emergency communications.

Norwegian Radio Amateurs get 70 MHz
Norway has joined Finland in giving Radio Amateurs access to the 70 MHz band.
As of November 5, 2009 Amateurs in Norway, her islands and in the Norwegian
land areas on Antarctica can run up to 100 watts on this 4 meter band.
