DID YOU TELL ANYONE ABOUT AMATEUR RADIO THIS WEEK?

I suppose that most clubs have their festive season arrangements in
hand by now. Not only are the social events good for morale but used
wisely they can be a boost to the club's finances. The experience of
many succesful clubs is that the more involved members are in their
activities the more "ownership" they have.
It is a simple solution to raise fees, apply levies or in other
words use just money to directly fund club activities. The problem with
this approach is that different members have different financial
resources and different demands on that resource. Over the years it has
been sad to see enthusiastic amateurs drop away from activities to which
they contributed and enjoyed because they felt they were valued simply
by the dollars they could throw at their hobby.
What we all have to do is grow our clubs in ways that make all
members belong. It isn't enough to simply acknowledge there can be
discrimination on the grounds of race, gender or other reasons. As the
"Amateur's Creed" which has appeared in the front of the ARRL Handbook
seemingly from the year dot, tries to express the idea of acceptance and
equality of all members of our great hobby; that is a great reminder in
how we grow our club as well as how we conduct ourselves, individually.
The good news is that Van, VK4VAN, continues to improve and has been
moved from intensive care and is looking forward to coming home. Van has
had visits from amateurs from the Bundaberg area and best wishes for his
recovery have been forwarded from the Gympie club, as well.
Those of us that were around for the WIA 75th anniversary may have
one of the stamps and first day covers issued by Australia Post tucked
away. I wonder will we see a similar collectable for the centenary?
