It was only last week when "Amateur Radio" magazine appeared in the
letter box. With the promotion of the centenary celebrations of the WIA
and JOTA/JOTI featuring prominently, it was actually the article from
VK4QS that grabbed my attention.
Michael describes his joining the ranks of the amateur fraternity during
the 1980's and the fact that he never felt himself a stranger, rather he
felt embraced by a new family. The behaviours which characterised the
hobby in past times are contrasted with the observed behaviours of a
number of licensees today.
Yes, community standards have altered and language that would have
landed you in court, in years gone by, is now regarded in a different
way. No longer is the solitary amateur hovering over glowing valves and
pounding morse whilst listening through headphones. Today, it is more
likely that the room full of equipment has been replaced by a "shack"
integrated into the living space and the sounds that are received can be
overheard by any one in range of the speaker. If you would not like
material heard by your family and friends, surely you wouldn't transmit it?
The final part of Michael's article is devoted to how we can foster our
new recruits (and the listeners who anonymously assess our behaviour
from behind their receivers). This is a thought provoking article for
amateurs of any age who are interested in promoting AR.
Do you realise that our WIA is twice as old as ABC TV in VK4?

Hi I am Ray VK4CF with news from Redcliffe Amateur Radio Club for QNEWS.
Last weekend about 30 club members spent a very dusty weekend assisting some
300 scouts, cub, guides and rovers who visited the club’s portable station
located at the Murrongbong Scout camp near Petrie, north of Brisbane. It was
also good to see Richard, VK4ZAA from the Brisbane Digital group working with
Redcliffe club members for his third JOTA.
The scouts and cubs started to arrive at 8 am and the first event on the tour
was the kit building assisted by club members with soldering irons. The most
popular kit was the crystal radio set and thanks to Shaun, VK4FY, who put up a
50 metre length of wire to allow the cubs to listen to their newly built
radios.
Shaun was also the organiser of the JOTI part of the event.
Another kit available for building was the electric buzzer and although it
might NOT be welcomed when the cubs arrived home, the cubs certainly enjoyed
using the buzzer to practice their morse code skills. Many of the girls were
able to easily able to send morse across the camp site and a couple were able
to send simple sentences at the end of 10 minutes practice. The boys were
just a little slower.
Last Monday evening before the monthly tech talk, the club members were
provided with a slide show of the JOTA weekend which showed the highlights of
the weekend. The pictures will be up on the Redcliffe website by the end of
next week.
For the Tech talk, John, VK4YJV, described the design of the 2 metre repeater
antenna and also provided a detailed explanation of the constructions
difficulties of vhf and uhf antennas. The most critical of all the design
components of the repeater antenna was the feed point design. John through
the use of mathematics and a little trial and error was able to design and
construct a vertical dipole with a true 50 ohm feed point that ensured that
there will be no static build up, is totally waterproof and insect proof and
will be simple to maintain.
John was also able to show how critical is the construction of the antenna and
clearly spelt out to the audience that the techniques that we use on hf
antennas cannot be applied to uhf and vhf antennas. He also showed that if you
do not consider even little things in the design such as the fringing of the
ends of the driven elements, that even this can substantially change the
design parameters and the end result.
John for shadowed a further tech talk titled Plastics are not all plastics
Until next I’m Ray from the Redcliffe club and your listening to QNEWS from
