 136 KHZ Beacon

Kevin VK4WA tells us that after the WIA NEWS UNTIL 11AM aest the AX2 Beacon will
 transmit.

 Other times by request.

For those trying to listen he recommends, after reading extensively (RSGB both
books, web etc) that aerials be tuned and not just a piece of wire into the
 receiver.

Tuning can be just a series tune circuit (can be obtained from and old 140Khz IF
 transformer).

So a wire antennae in series with this tuned circuit will produce far better
results than just a piece of wire.

At their recent meeting in Melbourne the WIA Directors decided to
 identify the Brisbane D-Star club.

Last November, concurrently with the commissioning of the D-Star
repeater to serve the Melbourne area, Icom Australia and the WIA
announced the gift by Icom of 5 further D-Star repeaters to the WIA so
that a D-Star repeater can be commissioned to serve each of the other
 state capitals.

The Directors, acting on the advice of the Queensland Advisory
Committee, and after consultation with Icom Australia, announce that the
Gold Coast Amateur Radio Society Inc. shall be the D-Star club to serve
 the Brisbane area.

Redcliffe and District Radio Club tell us that its Thursday CW net will be
postponed for the time being. This is due to George VK4XY having other
commitments during this time slot. As soon as the CW practice is again
available the details will be notified on QNEWS.

10 Foundation licence students completed their training last Sunday and most
of the class, have advised that they will be assisting in operating of VK4IZ
for the John Moyle Field Day weekend. The week after Easter is the date for
 the exams and practical tests.

Meanwhile 7 advanced students are going well and most of them will be with
the club in the field as this news goes to air.

Peter VK4TGV reported at last Monday’s meeting that the repeater was working
but it would appear the water gremlins may have entered the feed line and
probably causing a higher SWR that the club would like. The Club will
provide details of when the repeater will be off the air to replace the feed
line and sort out some other issues.

Glen VK4FZ, advised that 2 new Icom 718 rigs, and MJF 998 ATU and the 3 new
yagis for 10, 15 and 20 metres had been acquired and will form the main part
of the club’s equipment for the John Moyle weekend.

Good luck to all stations for this contest weekend and don’t forget to check
for VK4IZ on all hf bands, on CW, phone and other modes during the weekend.

Will be using a vertical antenna suspended by helium balloons on 160
metres, so come and say hello on the air or visit up at Petrie Scout Camp.

WICEN North Queensland Co-ordinator Ray VK4NET
has put out the call to action for hams to help out with
communications for the 2008 Mount Stuart Rally Sprint
happening in Townsville on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th June.

Apparently the role of Communication Volunteers will be
greatly expanded with at least 12 operators
 required for this event.

If you are in town during that weekend, please contact
Ray VK4NET soonest with an offer for support during both
days of the event. Ray will be finalising numbers by the
 TARC April Management Meeting.

- More work done at Mount Stuart

Saturday March 8th saw some members of theTARCinc perform
more work at the Mount Stuart Repeater Site as part of the
regular effort to improve facilities at the site.

A new equipment hut air-conditioner donated by Geoff Farnell
of UHF Comms was fitted by Phil VK4HSV with help from
Lorne VK4TLB and Gavin VK4ZZ to replace the air-conditioner
donated nearly 6 years ago by Barry Dionysius of Navcom Electronics.
The old unit had been in constant service until very recently when
the compressor had ceased to work.

A dangerous piece of metal, belonging to a disused antenna gantry track
was brought safely to earth by Lorne VK4TLB without any harm to
 surrounding wildlife.

Some branch trimming on the site trees was performed by Gavin VK4ZZ
in preparation for installation of new antenna mounting poles that
will be used to bring the VK4RAT ATV repeater online in the
 near future.

As we heard during the National News theTARCinc have been active during this
weekends John Moyle Field Day contest using callsign VK4WIT from Bluewater
 Scout Den.

If you haven't already done so head on out and participate - it only costs
$10 per head to attend right now!

Proceeds going to Bluewater Scout Group to help them out with an upgrade
 to the hall.

 TARC Social Evening this Tuesday

This Tuesday March 18th the TARC Social Evening will be happening
at the Club Rooms atop SES HQ Green Street West End from
7-30pm. Come along and lend a helping hand to put the magazine of renown,
Back-scatter together and socialise with fellow hams.
 All welcome !
