 WIA PRESIDENT MICHAEL OWEN VK3KI:-

"The WIA began with a meeting of like minded people at the Hotel Australia,
Martin Place, Sydney, on the 11th March, 1910, which formed the Institute of
 Wireless Telegraphy of Australia.

Has anything been happening about the centenary of the WIA next year, you may
 well ask.

Well, actually, yes, a great deal has been happening to celebrate the founding
of the Wireless Institute of Australia 100 years ago.

The WIA’s Centenary Committee has been working on it for some 18 months. It
 has prepared extensive plans

With the broadcast next Sunday and with the October issue of AR we will be
launching the details of the celebration of the centenary of organised amateur
radio in Australia, which will commence in May and with a very special annual
meeting in Canberra at the end of that month and continue through to the end
 of October.

And, we propose a very special role for our affiliated clubs.

So, make sure you are listening to VK1WIA next weekend".

DISCUSSION POINT With Geoff Emery vk4zpp

Those of us that live in the regional and rural areas depend on many
community volunteers and one of the better known groups are the local
Rural Fire Services. Over the years, many amateurs have been able to
assist their local volunteer brigades by supplying radios, doing
installation work and manning the base radio system. Other radio
hobbyists have joined the brigades and been at the front line of fire
fighting. Around the Wide Bay area, I am aware of several current and
former volunteer fire fighters amongst the radio fraternity.

As part of our preparation for the summer season, it is not only the
holiday preparations and the tidying up in case of cyclones but ensuring
that our property is rendered as safe to fire ravage as possible. As
much as I hate to suggest it (but then DX is not holding most of us to
the HF Bands) some time removing the combustible items and reducing the
fuel load with the lawn mowing equipment is not only good for the soul
but may protect you and your family in the event of an emergency.

Having had the experience of having to get my family out of a burning
house and wondering what can be done when all the records and
belongings are sodden ash, I can only emphasise the warnings issued by
the Fire Authorities. Make sure you have charged batteries in your
mobile phones and HT's and an escape plan, should you ever need it.

Along the way, maybe your club can assist another group of worthy
volunteers - your local volunteer fire service.

 SILENT KEY

In the QNEWS broadcast this week, (http://www.wiaq.com/ftp/vk4_qnews_64.mp3 )
we pause to remember Silent Key Noel Mitchell VK4KP .. you may have bought
your first ham radio rig from him. Make sure you listen as Peter Jones VK4YAC
 presents a very special trbute.

"Noel Mitchell first got his Ham radio licence somewhere in the 1950s..

In earlier years he served in the Air Force as an Instrument Maker in
New Guinea during World War Two.

In fact, Noel had a life long love of aviation.

However his interest in all things radio led him to become a YAESU dealer in
the early 70s .. but he's probably best remembered as a distributor for
Kenwood radios from the late 1970s through the 80s and 90s.

He was very active himself on all bands HF, VHF and UHF.

In fact he was one of the early ones to call in to Queensland's first fulltime
two-metre repeater which was built on Mt Tamborine near the Gold Coast in the
 early 70s...

 AUDIO

Rare audio indeed, from the early 70s, recently uncovered by Bruce VK4EHT.

Noel VK4KP was also a pioneer of Amateur Television, being a founding member
of the SEQ-ATV Group in the late 70s .. a club he stayed with for the next
 30 years until his death.

He was featured in several mainstream TV programs promoting ATV, such as A
Current Affair and on Channel Ten News..

Noel had a love of music, being a life member of the Theatre Organ Society of
Australia.. where he produced many musicals and shows.

Mr Mitchell was also a great family man, always surrounded by his wife Audrey,
and many children and grand children.

Never really coming to terms with the loss of his wife Audrey last year, and
after suffering a cancer related illness, Noel the KP eventually went silent
aged 85 .. on Monday the 14th of September 2009.

Truly one of the colourful characters of the Ham Radio community who'll never
 be forgotten.

We remember .. Noel Mitchell.. Victor Kilo-4-Kilo-Papa".

 WEIRD AND WONDERFUL

Runs Entirely Off Power In Trees

The Science Daily website on Sept 9th reported about research undertaken by
the University of Washington in relation to powering devices from the energy
 flowing around trees.

A study last year from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology found that
plants generate a voltage of up to 200 millivolts when one electrode is
placed in a plant and the other in the surrounding soil. Those researchers
have since started a company developing forest sensors that exploit this new
 power source.

The UW team sought to further academic research in the field of tree power by
building circuits to run off that energy. They successfully ran a circuit
solely off tree power for the first time.

Co-author Carlton Himes, a UW undergraduate student, spent last summer
exploring likely sites. Hooking nails to trees and connecting a voltmeter, he
found that bigleaf maples, common on the UW campus, generate a steady voltage
of up to a few hundred millivolts. This voltage is then put through another
circuit to boost this up to a usable 1.1 volts which is enough to run
low-power sensors. The equipment powers down to save energy and an in-built
"heart-beat" clock that runs from 1 nanowatt, keeps the system awake for
 short periods.

The team has proven that this is not a dissimilar metal – battery effect and
it will never generate large amounts of power but it can be used to power
sensors and gauge the tree's health.

TWO MORE RADIO TOWERS COME DOWN

Two more broadcast radio towers have been felled. Thais, since
radicals in the Pacific Northwest toppled two towers owned by KRKO in
Everett Washington as we reported last week.

The first involves WEAB in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Radio World says
that the Federal Bureau of Investigation is trying to find out who cut
the guy wires of the stations 350-foot tower causing it to fall to the
ground. The Clear Channel tower is one of five in the same location of
Whitehall Township. Authorities as saying no one was injured and no
other property was damaged in the incident. The station operates at
790 kHz, went on the air in 1949. Its on the air with its remaining towers.

There's no mystery to why the 400 foot tower for of WTJV AM in Deland,
Florida fell. A local newspaper says that truck full of high school
students snagged one of the guy wires on its bumper after a high school
football game. No one was injured, even though the tower and a power
line fell. The station operate on 1490 kHz serves the Daytona Beach area.

 COMMEMORATING PIERRE CURIE

On the air, keep an ear open for the fascinating call TM150RPC. Its on
the air to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of physician
and Nobel Prize laureate Pierre Curie.

For those of you not aware, Pierre Curie was a French physicist, a
pioneer in crystallography, magnetism, piezoelectricity and
radioactivity. In 1903 he received the Nobel Prize in Physics with his
wife, Maria Sklodowska-Curie, and Henri Becquerel, in recognition of
the extraordinary services they have rendered by their joint researches
on the radiation phenomena discovered by Becquerel. That discovery is
more commonly known as the X-Ray.

You can listen out for TM150RP-C on all bands and modes. QSLs go via F5KAZ.

UK CEASES MANUFACTURE OF TV RECEIVERS

The production of television receivers marked made in the United Kingdom
has ended. On Thursday, August 22nd the final TV rolled off the
production line at Toshiba's factory in Plymouth, England marking an end
to the manufacture of a technology the UK invented.

In the UK, John Logie Baird is the man credited with inventing the
television receiver. He demonstrated his first television set to the
world in 1926. His Baird Corporation was the world's only recognized TV
manufacturer at the end of the 1920s, with their Televisor Model B being
the first mass-produced, commercially available set.

In the United States the work of Baird is little known. Here the credit
as to who was the inventor of modern television really comes down to two
different people in two different places both working on the same
problem at about the same time. They were Vladimir Zworykin, a
Russian-born American inventor working for Westinghouse and later RCA,
and Philo Farnsworth, a privately backed inventor from the state of
Utah. The duplicity of work eventually lead to a court battle that with
patent priority status ruled in favour of Farnsworth in 1939. You can

 SEARCHING FOR WALDO THE ROBOT

Lastly, scientists along Florida's Gulf Coast are trying to find a radio
controlled underwater robot that has mysteriously vanished. Jerry Gaul,
 KE7GGV, has the details:

Scientists at Mote Marine Laboratory have lost a bright yellow
submersible research robot somewhere in the Gulf waters off Venice, Florida.

The sea going remote control research device from laboratory in Sarasota
has been missing since Monday, August 31st. Scientists aren't sure what
happened to the robot, which is nicknamed Waldo. Some think that it
might have sprung a leak or suffered a malfunction and sunk. Others
believe that It also could be on the surface, but its communication
beacon or E-L-T has malfunctioned and that it cannot signal its location.

Waldo the sea going robot is 6-foot-long, weighs about 115 pounds, has
short wings midway up its cylindrical body and cost about $100,000. He
was also equipped with a detector to find a toxic algae bloom called red
tide that was valued at another $30,000.

If you live along the Gulf Coast and see something bright yellow strange
floating off shore, that could be the missing robot.

For the Amateur Radio Newsline, I’m Jerry Gaule, KE7GGV.

If you find Waldo or even hear his radio signal you may be eligible for
Mote Marine Laboratory's no-questions-asked reward. Their contact
number is area code 941-388-4441. Ask for extension 271.

Glorioso Island FT5GA team is now active.

The team had some antenna problems at first due to windy weather conditions
and a faulty contact on a WARC Spiderbeam which has been fixed. Indications
seem that all three stations are now on the air.

Over in the USA stations report that the FT5GA signals are very weak and

Activity has been on all bands and the CW/SSB modes with some RTTY.

Operations will last until October 5th.

Melbourne Digital Amateur Television – update

A digital uplink test has been held at the Mt Dandenong site of the ATV
 repeater VK3RTV with four stations participating – VK3GMZ, VK3KHB, VK3TRX
 and VK3CH.

This test session on Saturday the 19th of September result in all stations
being received at Mt Dandenong, reports Peter Cossins VK3BFG, with no
errors or pixilation. The digital uplink standard for the repeater is
 DVS-S Satellite.

Experiments with power levels demonstrated that low power operation is
 possible.

Mick VK3CH at Thornbury was successful with just 150 milliwatts, which
must be some kind of ATV record covering a distance of 30 kilometres.

The VK3RTV Controller is almost finished and it is envisaged that full
Digital operations will commence around the end of the month.

VK3RTV will take both analogue and digital input signals, but the output
will be DVB-T, which is the standard used by commercial TV stations.

The upgrade to VK3RTV was funded by Amateur Radio Victoria with the WIA
also providing $1,000 through its Club Grants Program.
