We pause now to remember another Silent Key .. Noel Mitchell VK4KP ..
... in fact you may have bought your first ham radio rig from him.
With a tribute, here's Peter VK4YAC...
"Noel Mitchell first got his Ham radio licence somewhere in the 1950s..
In earlier years he served in the Air Force as an Instrument Maker in
New Guinea during World War Two.
In fact, Noel had a life long love of aviation.
However his interest in all things radio led him to become a YAESU dealer in
the early 70s .. but he's probably best remembered as a distributor for
Kenwood radios from the late 1970s through the 80s and 90s.
He was very active himself on all bands HF, VHF and UHF.
In fact he was one of the early ones to call in to Queensland's first fulltime
two-metre repeater which was built on Mt Tamborine near the Gold Coast in the
early 70s...
AUDIO
Rare audio from the early 70s, recently uncovered by Bruce VK4EHT.
Noel VK4KP was also a pioneer of Amateur Television, being a founding member
of the SEQ-ATV Group in the late 70s .. a club he stayed with for the next
30 years until his death.
He was featured in several mainstream TV programs promoting ATV, such as A
Current Affair and on Channel Ten News..
Noel had a love of music, being a life member of the Theatre Organ Society of
Australia.. where he produced many musicals and shows.
Mr Mitchell was also a great family man, always surrounded by his wife Audrey,
and many children and grand children.
Never really coming to terms with the loss of his wife Audrey last year, and
after suffering a cancer related illness, Noel the KP eventually went silent
aged 85 .. on Monday the 14th of September 2009.
Truly one of the colourful characters of the Ham Radio community who'll never
be forgotten.
We remember .. Noel Mitchell.. Victor Kilo-4-Kilo-Papa.
GYMPIE

Queensland has had it's first declared fire bans this week when the
temperatures became unseasonably high and the winds filled the valleys
with smoke and peppered the sky into grey opacity, around the Gympie
area. With the recent report in WIA National News of the Californian
amateur family that lost their home and the memories of the devastation
of large tracts of Victoria, this is a warning which we must take seriously.
Those of us that live in the regional and rural areas depend on many
community volunteers and one of the better known groups are the local
Rural Fire Services. Over the years, many amateurs have been able to
assist their local volunteer brigades by supplying radios, doing
installation work and manning the base radio system. Other radio
hobbyists have joined the brigades and been at the front line of fire
fighting. Around the Wide Bay area, I am aware of several current and
former volunteer fire fighters amongst the radio fraternity.
As part of our preparation for the summer season, it is not only the
holiday preparations and the tidying up in case of cyclones but ensuring
that our property is rendered as safe to fire ravage as possible. As
much as I hate to suggest it (but then DX is not holding most of us to
the HF Bands) some time removing the combustible items and reducing the
fuel load with the lawn mowing equipment is not only good for the soul
but may protect you and your family in the event of an emergency.
Having had the experience of having to get my family out of a burning
house and wondering what can be done when all the records and
belongings are sodden ash, I can only emphasise the warnings issued by
the Fire Authorities. Make sure you have charged batteries in your
mobile phones and HT's and an escape plan, should you ever need it.
Along the way, maybe your club can assist another group of worthy
volunteers - your local volunteer fire service.
