Spring is well upon us now and somehow the conditions down here are
mimicking those on the solar surface.Normally, if the rains had been
consistent, there would be shoots and flowers in abundance but like the
solar surface, the early signs are about but there are no bloomin' sun spots.
It is also the time that reminds us that the long summer holiday period
is not that far away. More grass to cut and preparations to make for
family gatherings and parties in December.
So how are you preparing for this period? Is your club holding a summer
get-together and organising working bees to keep the grass cut and the
cobwebs at bay? Have you got your program to take advantage of what may
be fleeting openings on HF with hopefully the bands above 10m giving
some good sport?
Just as the authorities give warnings about road safety, safe enjoyment
of water sports and awareness of hostile natives such as crocodiles and
snakes, we should all be aware that enjoying amateur radio should be
done with care, too. Whether we are at home or doing some field day
contesting, we need to use safe practices. Make sure that the metal
antenna is not going to foul electricity wires during erection or should
it be brought down by storm damage. Make sure that proper fatigue
management is employed if you are driving in the summer heat and playing AR.
Just remember that Ross Hull, whose name is remembered in one of most
prestigious contests, died as a result of electrocution caused by a
momentary lapse of concentration. AR is not an extreme sport, for most
of us, and we look forwarded to hearing you on the air in the future.
Redcliffe and District Radio Club
www.redclifferadioclub.org.au/
Hi I am Ray VK4CF with news from Redcliffe Amateur Radio Club for QNEWS.
At last Monday’s night meeting Shaun VK4FY and James VK4TJF provided a
detailed briefing of the club’s RD contest weekend. Shaun reported on a
fabulous weekend where 570 contacts were made. Shaun requested for any
feedback on the organising of the event as it was the 1st time for both he &
James. Members present thanked both Shaun and James for a job well done.
Club president, David VK4DC, moved a vote of thanks to Shaun VK4FY for his
fantastic efforts on the new club web site. It really is worth a look and
Shaun would welcome any feedback.
JOTA weekend is on the 17 & 18 October. The meeting discussed the event and
the overall project leader will be Glen VK4FZ. There is always a need for
lots of volunteers to assist and the club will be conducting all the same
events as last year.
There will be no open fires allowed at the site this year and so the ever
popular camp roast will not happen this year. So it will be BYO food & drink
and the club BBQ’s will be supplied. Don’t forget it is BYO water, chairs &
tables etc, and discussions are under way for the use of the showers. Camping
fees are yet to be advised but it will be about $5 per night to cover toilet
& fuel etc…
Any amateur in the greater Brisbane area who would like to assist the club
with the anticipated 400 scouts, cub, guides and rovers who will be visiting
the site, should contact Peter, VK4TAA via the Redcliffe’s club website.
John VK4YJB should be certainly proud of the 2 metre antenna he designed and
built for the club’s repeater and last afternoon Monday Bob, ZL3ADH called in
from Greymouth, New Zealand direct. Club members initially thought that he
was using ECHOLINK but he wasn’t. He was working the repeater using 80 watts
FM and a 16 element collinear 2 metre antenna. The troposphere ducting was
working well and the following stations were able to work Bob before the
signal died, VK4TV, VK4FKEN,VK4YZ, VK4KET and VK4CF. It was a really fantastic
and unusual contact of about 2400 km for all involved.
So until next we meet, this is Ray Vk4CF and you are listening to QNEWS via
VK4WIA.
