Sometimes a trip down memory lane refreshes the awareness of how far things
have come in a relatively short time. When we consider that our hobby of AR
is officially 100 years old and we have progressed from spark transmitters
and coherers to software defined radios, seen the development of the
thermionic valve and it's near demise and the invention of the transistor
and its metamorphosis into the IC and the heart of any computer is packed
with legions of dwarf semiconductors, it has been a fascinating ride, to say
 the least.

Over the last week I have been able to re-read Neville Williams "Australia's
Radio Pioneers", published by "Electronics Australia",1994. Many of the names
that we recognise from our hobby such as Ross Hull and John Moyle become more
than just names on a contest. Much of the experimental work which brought
about our country wide broadcasting and television services was done by radio
amateurs, or licensed experimenters, as they were known in the foundation
 years of wireless.

So many of the notable experimenters of the past were also distinguished in
their involvement with the Wireless Institute of Australia. Our hobby has
traditions built on an historical base that we can be proud to uphold.

As Drew Diamond, VK3XU, points out in the second of his articles on 136kHz,
in this month's "Amateur Radio" magazine it was the amateurs that made such
big contributions to the understanding of long waves that were relegated to
the supposedly unusable short waves. With VK Advanced Licensees now able
to apply to once again use long waves, this could be the classic "everything
 old is new again".

 Redcliffe and District Radio Club

Hi I am Ray VK4CF with news from Redcliffe Amateur Radio Club for QNEWS.

2 weeks ago at the club meeting, there were some surprise visitors to the club
when Gary, VK4FGAZ with XYL, Anita and family. It was good to see them and
Gary provided a good briefing to members about his set-up at his QTH in
 Stanthorpe.

Gary and daughter Lauren VK4FLMC have been putting out a big signal with a
doublet antenna some 30 metres high. Gary also attributes the big signal to
the fact of a great earthing system with a natural water table some 2 metres
below the surface of his land. Some of are very lucky with the location of
 their QTH!

At last Monday night’s meeting Anita surprised us all with her second visit to
the club within a week but this time without Gary who was setting up to pour
the concrete slab for the new house.

Two weeks ago, Peter VK4EA and John VK4YJV attended the aviation Fly-in near
Esk last weekend. Peter had his APRS system in place to show how aircraft
could be tracked on the computer. Despite the heavy morning fog, many
aircraft were able to fly in and with many visitors very interested in Peter’s
amateur radio set-up and with John providing detailed commentary of how the
 equipment actually worked.

Tomorrow, Monday night 14, the second Monday night of the month, is a general
management meeting night and all members are invited to attend and have input
to the running of the club.

The third Monday of the month is the well received Tech Talk and the next talk
will be presented by Doug, VK4KZT, and the topic will be on the topic of
 metallurgy.

Club secretary Peter VK4TAA has also advised that the JOTA weekend is
approaching fast and the club will be operating as a portable and field
station at the Scout camp at Murrenbong near Petrie. Any amateur who would
like to assist the club with the anticipated 400 scouts, cub, guides and
rovers who will be visiting the site, should contact Peter, VK4TAA via the
 Redcliffe’s club website.

So until next we meet, this is Ray Vk4CF and your listening to QNEWS via
 VK4WIA.
