As we move along in our club life, it is important to consider the
directions that our club is taking and where we are going. Amateurs tend
to be an isolated group who do their own thing from their own QTH. At
times getting involvement in club activities can be difficult when there
is no clear direction or feeling of ownership of the project.
Clubs have to find a path that allows all its members to input ideas and
develop interests that create a sense of belonging for them to grow and,
in fact, retain an active membership. The difficulty for us in the amateur
fraternity is that we encompass many levels of expertise in our personal
involvement in the hobby. Not only are there the different classes of
licence but different paths to getting the ticket. Ages are spread widely
and past experiences tend to colour the attitudes of people.
We have to remember to include all our members in the experience of AR at
the club level. This is also required by the anti-discrimination acts in
force both at state and federal level. But then this is the spirit of the
hobby as set out in the "Amateur's Creed" isn't it?
As one amateur put it to me recently, "amateur radio is a communications
hobby but we are notoriously poor at communicating amongst ourselves."
This should be a reminder to us all, that in promoting the hobby we must
be prepared to listen, consider and discuss. Or as a well known helicopter
flying amateur put it some years ago, "make sure the brain is engaged
before putting the mouth into gear."
The Gympie Communications and Electronics Group, Inc. holds its weekly net
at 7.30 p.m. each Monday on VK4RCM, 146.725MHz.

AMATEUR RADIO OPERATORS ARE OUT OF THEIR TREES
No, not really. However, a group of amateurs in Maryborough, Queensland, and
one in Curra, near Gympie, were transmitting out of their trees last Sunday,
Australia's National Tree Day.
>From the Maryborough Electronics & Radio Group, "MERGE", I'm Ray, VK4TPT.
Yes, the "MERGE' mob are at it again, using living trees as radiating
HF antennas.
Kathy, VK4KJ, Van, VK4VAN, Bob, VK4FNBL and myself, VK4TPT, attempted to
utilize a US Navy configuration involving a non-resonant Toroidal coil and
tuned parallel lines without success and so reverted to a tuned Toroid and
co-axial feed.
Despite only being able to tune to the 40m band and very heavy QRWM, (that's
interference from a washing machine) "MERGE" were able to make contact with;
VK2AMI mobile at ARAMAC, VK2FRKO at LEMON TREE PASSAGE, VK4BE at HERVEY BAY,
VK4SWR mobile in TOWNSVILLE, VK2HF at McLEAN, VK2MPT in SYDNEY, VK2ABN
South of BATEMANS BAY, VK3EW on the MORNINGTON PENINSULA and VK7ROY near
LAUNCESTON.
Alan, VK4TAD, in CURRA used a much earlier configuration, shunt feeding the
tree with a spike driven into the trunk.
Alan reported contacts with; VK2FJPR in GLOSTER, VK2FSEG in SYDNEY, and
VK7ROY near LAUNCESTON.
Alan also heard a very light signal from, and MAY have got his callsign
through to Bob, VK0BP, at the DAVIS Base ANTARCTICA.
"MERG" would like others to try out "Tree Antennas". Links to the three known
systems should be available in the text version of this news.
