On 20th July 2009 one of Brisbane Amateur Radio club members, Arthur VK4KBN
became a silent key at the age of 78.
Arthur was a real Gentleman and was always willing to help others in need.
He was net control of a daily net at 8am on vhf in the Brisbane area.
VK4KBN will be greatly missed by those who knew him, especially members of
the Brisbane Amateur Radio Club.

The Wide Bay Mini Ham Fest is now a happy memory for the many people who
attended Gootchie last weekend. Close to 100 people passed through the doors
and despite the seasonal ills so many people contributed to its success.
One person who is recovering from pneumonia drove across Brisbane to ensure
items were available. Another person who had been in hospital twice in the
previous fortnight manned a table of pre-loved items for sale.
It is these untold stories of devotion to the hobby that make one realise how
much members of this hobby are prepared to give of themselves. There is a true
spirit of amateur radio which is not always obvious until you participate in
an event like this.
So successful and harmonious was the day that the QCWA ladies have already
marked their calender for next year's ham fest and this before they were even
asked.
As a learning exercise, organising an event in 5 weeks is certainly a steep
slope to climb. The point is that if the amateurs of the Wide Bay area can do
this without too many hiccoughs then it proves it can be done elsewhere. With
the benefit of hindsight, the 2010 Wide Bay Mini Hamfest will be better.
Despite problems (Murphy came) Erik, VK4AES and his Easypal team were able to
demonstrate and explain this mode of digital SSTV to several interested
amateurs. Look out for some more signals appearing from the south east of
VK4 in the future.
GCEG conducts a net each Monday at 7.30 p.m. on Mt Corella repeater,
146.725MHz and the next monthly meeting will be held in the basement rooms
of Leading Edge Electronics, Reef Street, Gympie, Thursday next, 6th August
at 7.30 p.m.

I'm Ray VK4CF back with news from the Redcliffe AR Club".
At the beginning of last week John VK4YJV and Peter VK4EA, climbed the
repeater the mast to put the new 2 metre antenna into action. Reports have
indicated that the repeater is working into areas that it has not been working
in before. The repeater footprint appears to be from south of Yatala to the
Yandina turn off on the north coast. Scotty VK4FLAE and John VK4YJV were able
to keyed up the repeater from the top of Cunningham Gap and then from near
Stanthorpe.
Whatever the footprint the repeater is working a real treat. The 70 cm
antenna is still the large whip and this has also improved the output as the
diplexer is not in use and the cavities are enjoying the reduced workload.
While talking about John, VK4YJV, John had successful surgery on his back last
Tuesday as is now walking without pain but will be taking it easy, until he
sees the specialist next month.
Last meeting night, Ric Day the acting principal of the Caboolture Special
school presented the club a certificate of appreciation to recognize the
club's assistance in the development of its students in literacy and numeracy
and their communication skills using the medium of amateur radio.
Peter VK4HOY who is the school's Vocational Educational Co-ordinator, also
invited the club to participate with the school to contact the international
space station and many club members said that they would be pleased to assist
with this great venture with the students.
Remember the Aircraft open day at the Caboolture Air Field this Sunday and
please visit the Redcliffe club's stand at the airport.
