became a silent key at the age of 78.
Arthur was a real Gentleman and was always willing to help others in need.
He was net control of a daily net at 8am on vhf in the Brisbane area.
VK4KBN will be greatly missed by those who knew him, especially members of
the Brisbane Amateur Radio Club.

As the news goes to air this morning we will be gathering in Maryborough
for a morning after debrief session following the Wide Bay Mini Hamfest.
What a whirlwind few weeks it has been around the Wide Bay area getting
this event pulled together.
The support from the area clubs and individual amateurs has been great and
with trade exhibitors travelling from as far away as the Brisbane area, it is
gratifying to see the spirit of the hobby so well on show. The support of the
WIA and QAC, as well as the birthday girls of ALARA have all contributed to
the success of this event. To all those who participated and supported the
Wide Bay Mini Ham Fest, the organisers say a heartfelt, thank you.
With this event behind us it is time to look over the results but even before
the day, it seemed that this would be the inaugural event on the amateur
calendar.
Making arrangements with different people has brought amateurs in contact
with people who know of the hobby and some of whom are interested in the
hobby. On that basis alone, the personal contact and advertising our hobby
has been worthwhile. As VK4-Baker-Baker has put it often on these broadcasts,
"who have you told about the hobby this week?"
It could be that a small local event will be an acorn that promotes the
mighty oak tree of future happenings in this great hobby of Amateur Radio.

Channel 14 UHF CB call "CQ MERG"
Next Sunday, the 2nd of August is Australia's National Tree Day.
Why is this significant? From the Maryborough Electronics & Radio Group,
I'm Ray, VK4TPT.
Listeners may recall from back in April, when "MERGE" held their Catastrophic
Disaster Simulation and Innovation Day, that Van, VK4VAN, and Ray, VK4TPT,
successfully loaded up a living tree as a 40 metre antenna.
Among the interstate contacts made was Seth, VK2CJA, in Coff's Harbour,
New South Wales. Seth suggested at the time that we should arrange a
"Tree Net" but this has not yet eventuated, so "MERGE" feels that National
Tree Day may be a fitting day to try again.
Whilst one can easily use a tree to hold up a Sloper, Inverted L, Dipole,
Inverted V or any other antenna, "MERG" would like others to try using the
tree itself as the radiating element.
There are two sites on the Internet with details of how this can be achieved.
The first, www.rexresearch.com/squier/squier.htm is a World War One system
using spikes driven into the tree trunk. DO NOT USE COPPER SPIKES IF YOU TRY
THIS.
The second site, http://w5jgv.com/tree_antenna/index.htm is more tree
friendly, using a toroidal coil around the trunk.
So there you are guys and girls. Have a look at those sites and try it out.
Or maybe even invent a better way.
"MERGE" will be operating from about 12:00 AEST next Sunday on or around
3615 KHz, 7060 KHz or 14.190 MHz or scanning around the bands looking for
signals.

August General Meeting BBQ
Our Next general meeting on 4th August is our BBQ meeting where a very short
meeting will commence at 6pm followed by a BBQ. Members are asked to bring
some salad and/or dessert.
Green Room Update
For those that don't know, the Green Room is SCARC's comms room and is slowly
being upgraded and improved with the help of a few members. A couple of older
HF radios are being sold off and replaced by some newer simple to operate HF
radios that will hopefully encourage some of the newer licensees to get on
air.
Battery banks and a commercial battery and solar control panel are being
hooked up to ensure there is a solid and long lasting DC supply. Thanks to the
various members who have either donated equipment or time for this.
Timely Reminder
A reminder to ensure you pay your license renewal on or before time. ACMA
provide a 60 day grace period before the callsign is listed on the web for
other amateurs to acquire. One member of the club that was previously
licensed for in excess of 40 years almost lost his callsign, but luckily that
has been saved.
Until next time, this is Gordon VK4VP from the Sunshine Coast Amateur Radio
Club.
