Bernie Burgess VK4IB

I am sad to inform you of the passing of Bernie Burgess VK4IB on the 24th of
June at Hervey Bay in Queensland after a long illness.

Bernie started much of his life down in VK7 and was known by many amateurs in
Tassie and will be sadly missed.

His funeral was held on Monday the 29th up at the Hervey Bay Crematorium.

Bernie was born in Caulfield, Victoria in 1926 and spent almost all his life
at sea, firstly with his family"s Crayfish and Scallop business, in the
Merchant Navy and as a Fisheries Inspector in Papua New Guinea.

As an Amateur Operator, Bernie was involved in the early days of the Hervey
Bay Amateur Radio Club and for the past few years had been an Associate Member
of the Maryborough Electronics and Radio Group.

Smooth Sailing and 73. BERNIE BURGESS, VK4IB, SK.

BOB TOMPKINS VK4BT

Bob vk4bt and Sue vk4st moved from Sydney to Mt Tambourine in yr 2000.

recognizing the Height above sea level would be ideal for Amateur Radio

Reception and sending, Bob built his antenna for that purpose and was
very successful in pursuing his hobby.

His life in Sydney was with Cars having served as Service Manager for
reputable firms such as Jaguar and Rover, also Peugot and Renault and
later in Health food businesses. Bob and Sue became Host Family to
Japanese Students who came to the Gold Coast to learn the language here
and Bob became very fluent in being able to speak fluent Japanese as

a result of attending language classes .

Bob was always a ready and willing volunteer for any help asked for
at club level and for private members to aid them in the hobby. He was

a highly respected member of the Gold Coast Amateur Radio club ,
generous and loyal to all as he persued his beloved hobby of Amateur
Radio. He became Treasurer to the Gold Coast Amateur Radio club and
served on other committees happy to serve where needed. He was a WIA
representative

His sudden passing was a shock to all who knew him.

At this month's meeting of GCEG, Paul, VK4YPM showed off the 70cm repeater and
components to the group. Members were able to see the repeater in action and
appreciate the need and benefits of using a diplexer. With the repeater firing
into a dummy load and h/t operating QRPp, it was the first time some of the
members had been close up and friendly with one of these devices that are so
much of the hobby - sort of out of sight and out of mind.

The meeting had information from QTAC and moved forward the repeater project
in the light of this news. Also the Wide Bay Mini Ham Fest project was
discussed and members had a healthy discussion on how to use this activity to
both promote the hobby of Amateur Radio and how we could improve the club
finances with suitable fundraising.

People wanted to know why this event has been dubbed a "mini" ham fest. Well
there are major events, the next in our general area will be Sunshine Coast's
Sunfest. With a venue in a quiet rural setting and a small country hall, this
was never meant to detract from the big events but fill a niche in the local
ham calendar for a social gathering open to the general public, as well.

>From the members of MERG, it has been full steam ahead on promoting and
organising the Mini Ham Fest. Publicity material are being prepared and road
signs made to direct people to the hall. Table bookings are being taken from
the amateur fraternity and there looks like there will be a great collection
of pre-loved goodies for sale. Catering and layout of the hall are being
addressed with constant stream of emails back and forth between the two clubs.
Invitations to community organisations have been sent out and the whole bag
of tricks is being used in a remarkably short time to get the show on the
road.

Currently there are 4 trade displays included as well as tables for 3 clubs
and another for the WIA; another 4 tables for sellers of pre-loved radio gear
as well as the QCWA handicrafts display. This is apart from the external
displays from community service organisations. It is growing fast.

Perhaps the song "To dream the impossible dream" should be the introduction
to this project with a time frame of only 5 weeks with "A home amongst the
gum trees" as a theme for the event.

Wide Bay Mini Ham Fest, Saturday 25th July at the Gootchie QCWA Hall,
Gootchie Road, Gootchie. Circle the date on your calendar.

LOGAN WEST
IRLP node 6402

Meeting day:- 1st Wednesday of every month (except January)

Peter Harding VK4OD, President of the Logan West Amateur Radio Club reports
"On the weekend of 20 & 21 June the Logan West Amateur Radio club with helpers
from outside of the club supplied communications for the Big Country Horse
Endurance Ride which was run or should I say due to a LOT of RAIN over the
weekend, the Riders and support crews plodded about in a very muddy situation
on the tracks and in the Ride Base.

As President of the Club I offer my heartfelt thanks to the operators who made
the effort and put up with some atrocious conditions. Once again Thank you,
and yes we have been asked to assist again next year.

The Secretary of the Endurance Riders organisation advised that although
numbers were down on last year (190 riders last year, and only 104 riders
this year), have said they put the absence of so many they put down to the
wet weekend.

Channel 14 UHF CB call "CQ MERG"

In the spirit of "communicating with the uninitiated", rather than
"preaching to the converted", members of the Maryborough Electronics and
Radio Group in Queensland feed the WIA and Qnews broadcasts into the
"eQSO for PMR radio" system.

This FREEWARE system is identical to, but totally separate from, the
amateur eQSO system.

As the PMR service is, like Australia's UHF CB service, so-called
"Licence Free", this enables anyone, anywhere in the world to log in and
listen to the WIA broadcasts on their computers using the Client
software, or, where local regulations permit, establish an RF gateway
and re-broadcast locally on Europe's PMR or 27MHz FM services, or the
Australian UHF CB service.

Of the last years 755 call-ins to the UHF CB broadcasts, 23 were via
eQSO, from as far afield as Gippsland and Bendigo in Victoria, Perth WA,
Canada, the USA, the UK, Sweden, Norway, Turkey and Germany.

The farthest away log-in was from TRAVIS, on the island of SPITZBERGEN,
in the SVARLBAD group, located half way between Norway and the NORTH
POLE, and surrounded by POLAR BEARS!

Details can best be found by entering AU6PER into your search engine,
downloading the software, entering the Australian Server's IP address
and setting up your node.

>From the Maryborough Electronics and Radio Group, I'm Ray, VK4TPT.

Quay West Resort Noosa Century Bike Ride
The recent Quay West Resort Brisbane to Noosa bike ride held on Sunday June 14
was a great success from the clubs perspective of providing communications.
Special thanks also go to members of Redcliffe and Caboolture clubs who
provided operators for the checkpoints at the more southern end of the ride.
There were approximately 1400 bike riders in the event and 40 operators
manning checkpoints along the way.

Two new F Calls
We welcome two new F calls to the amateur ranks thanks to the effort of Harvey
VK4AHW, Wayne VK4WS and Laurie VK4BLE. These two students required special
assessments due to their particular needs and we thank Laurie from the
Redcliffe club for his assistance.
So listen out for Mat VK4FMJT and Cec VK4FMOZ
