The First Ten Thousand Miles Award
A North American meteor scatter group "Super 7" has introduced a "Ten Thousand
Miles" award for completing FSK441 contacts over 1000 miles for a total of
Ten Thousand Miles after 1 May 2009.
There are awards for single band and muli-band with 6 meters being the easiest
and 2 meters more difficult.

The first award issued has gone not to North America but to VK with Rex VK7MO
completing 10,000 miles on two metres which includes four contacts with ZL3s

World Radio Conference WRC-11 re-scheduled
World Radio Conference WRC-11, originally pencilled in during the latter half
of 2011, will now take place in Geneva between 23rd January and 17th February
2012.
Bogong High Plains Winter Expedition
Several Victorian amateurs are preparing portable gear and cross-country
ski kit in readiness for their annual back country trip into the
Bogong High Plains.
The group will be lead once more by VK3GT, VK3SN and VK3HFI along with several
others as they take ultra-light solar powered gear in to the snowy wonderland
of the Australian Alps from 6 to 10 August 2009.
And VK3SN is going from, well might say the sublime to the ridiculous, you see
just prior to hitting the slopes, he'll be heading a DXpedition to the
tropical wonderland called Tonga.
But more on that 'pedition later in this bully.
Listen out for the portable QRP station in the snow calling on bands from
160 through to 20 metres each afternoon and evening. Have a chat and hear
about winter conditions on the roof of Australia. In previous years,
they have operated from tents, snow caves, igloos and remote mountain huts.
Who knows what they'll get up to this year, but the snow looks great and you
can share in the fun by catching up on the air.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority has released for public
comment a proposal to increase by two the number of frequencies available

Television audiences in remote and regional parts of Western Australia

FROM THE TREC PRESIDENT.
Here are a few ideas for getting more out of ham radio. You could start
collecting stamps which come on QSLs mailed direct from overseas. That is if
you work stations overseas.
It is also nice to handle a nice crisp American dollar sometimes included with
the request for a card.
Learning another language is a natural add on for short wave operating. It is
mostly the other way around as most contacts wish to learn English.
Enhance your knowledge of geography travelling the world from your operating
position. Then of course travel and meet some of the good friends you are sure
to make.
There are organisations through which contacts are found to get accommodation
with a ham overseas in exchange for having them stay over with you. There are
rigs ready to operate for you and getting a licence to operate in most places
you go is not too hard. Nice to collect some new call signs for yourself and
adorn your QSL with them.
Enhance you spherical geometry knowledge by working the satellites or
climb mount Everest by contacts via the moon or moon bounce.
From the beginnings of radio there has only been one way and that has been
up and I mean in frequency. Our future communications are destined for the
gigahertz with satellites using small antennas. 6 metres will be like
160 metres today. So are you on inward looking ham using low frequency bands
and only ever talking to the guy down the road. Break out of the rut and work
DXCC.

ARISS REACHES 443 SCHOOL CONTACTS
A major milestone for the Amateur Radio on the International Space
Station or ARISS school project. This as the total number of ARISS
contacts between the astronaut hams on board the orbiting outpost and
schoolrooms here on Earth has now reached 443.
6 METER NOISE FLOOR DROPS AS DTV REPLACES ANALOG
A present to the United States VHF and UHF ham community. This from
both the broadcasters and the FCC as many of the nations VHF television
stations vacate many of the low VHF channels, go digital and lower the
overall noise floor on 6 meters.
The big digital television change out began at 00:01 EST on Friday, June
12th. Stations across the nation chose their own time to turn off their
analog transmitters and move their operations to their permanent digital
channels. Many of the low-band stations opted to move to the UHF band.
A lot of them operated on Channel 2 just above the 6 meter ham band.
And when those analog channel 2 transmitters went QRT, the noise level
on 6 meters dropped in many locations.
CQ PROP EDITOR CHALLENGES PROP EXPERTS
The Propagation Editor CQ magazine is challenging the accuracy of the
newest predictions on Solar Cycle 24.
In an online commentary posted on the CQ magazine website, Tomas Hood,
NW7US, notes that this same group of what he term as so-called
"experts" has issued multiple predictions for this cycle
already. He notes that so far all of which they now say are wrong and
he asks why we should believe they're right this time.
Hood points out that, while the Sun itself is millions of years old,
scientists have been tracking solar activity for just a few hundred
years. He says that in his view it is pretty arrogant to postulate that
mankind has any real understanding and handle on what the Sun might do next.

ALTUS OK. TO THE WORLD
Hams in Altus, Oklahoma, are starting a local net with a worldwide
outreach. This, thanks to a local repeater tied to the world by Voice
over Internet Protocol or VoIP technology.
Dale Town, AF5AF, is the president of the Altus Area Amateur Radio
Association. He says hat the new local net will be tied to the world
using 444.650 MHz repeater that will also accept stations check-ins from
Echolink operators who connect to WX5EM-R node number 361238.
The net will be held on Wednesdays at 01:00 UTC which is 2000 hours
Central Daylight Savings Time. All amateur radio operators are
encouraged to participate.

WEIRD N WONDERFUL
The RFID tags go round and round - underground
Confidex, a company with expertise in RFID design, manufacturing and
engineering, has supplied more than 10,000 of its Ironside UHF Gen2 hard tags
to the London Underground.
The tags are being used to improve escalator maintenance.
The underground escalators carry more than three million passengers every day.
Most commuters and tourists don't give the travelling metal staircases a
second thought; a fact that is a testament to the reliability of the system
and the care taken over the maintenance.
The steps that make up these escalators are subject to constant wear from the
feet of passengers and from the mechanical movement on the escalator track.
To address the need for faster, more accurate and more cost-efficient
maintenance, RFID technology was chosen. A decision was made to use RFID tags.
The 'step tracking system' uses a PDA with RFID reader mounted on a cradle
beside the escalator and application software to read and write information
on the tag.

The second weekend in July, this year the 11th and 12th, the 2009 version of
the IARU HF World Championship will take place.
The objective of this unique SSB and CW contest is to contact as many other
amateurs, especially IARU member society HQ stations, around the world using
the 160, 80, 40, 20, 15 and 10 meter bands.
It is open to all radio amateurs around the world.
IARU region 2 have invited IARU member societies to actively participate in
this 24-hour contest with their HQ stations
Night of Nights X!
The annual Maritime Radio Historical Society "Night of Nights" event is
close!
This will be the tenth annual Night of Nights!
Every year on 12 July (US time) many famous coast stations return to the air
to commemorate what was then thought to be the last commercial Morse stations
in the USA.
Since then MRHS coast station KSM has taken to the air and three other
commercial coast stations have received licenses for operation in the
MF band (KNE, KDR and WFT). Historic ships have reactivated their radio
consoles and are active on MF and HF.
The purpose of Night of Nights is to emphasize the objective of the MRHS:
to preserve the skills, traditions and culture of the men and women who came
before us and who made the profession of radiotelegrapher one of honour and
skill.
This year stations KPH, and KSM will be on the air.
It is anticipated that KFS will be on the air as well.
Organisors hope that US Coast Guard stations NMC, NOJ and NMN will join as
they did last year.
Amateur station K6KPH will guard 3550, 7050 and 14050kc for reception reports.

Often we at wianews never receive notification of events, even WIA named
contests from the various contest managers, point in case a WIA field day
last weekend, so was great to see one person "on the ball". Namely
Allan Brown VK2JED who iscontestmanager for the Westlakes Amateur Radio Club.
VK2JED wants us to mark our 2010 calender for the Australian wide
FM CQ Rpeater Contest which Westlakes developed.
Next contest will take place April 30, 2010 over 7 days until May 7.

Stephen VK3SN is heading to the South Seas and will cram a dipole, coax and
an HF rig in his backpack. He'll be stringing up the antenna between a
couple of coconut palms on several small islands in the Tongatapu group
in the Kingdom of Tonga. This tiny nation is renowned for its beautiful
coral reefs, friendly locals and occasionally spectacular volcanic activity.
His call sign will be A35AB and he'll be active on 80 through to 15 metres
from 27 June until 5 July. Listen out and have a contact with this portable
station in the tropical Pacific.

WIRELESS WEATHER
Electric-blue clouds sweep across Europe
Last month, June, a remarkably intense display of electric-blue noctilucent
clouds swept across Europe.
Sightings were made in Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, France, Germany,
Poland and the British Isles.
These mysterious clouds are known to flourish during years of solar minimum
and 2009 is such a year. This means more NLCs may be in the offing, not only
over Europe but also North America and elsewhere.

MYSTERY OF THE MISSING SUNSPOTS
The sun is in the pits of a century-class solar minimum, and sunspots have
been puzzlingly scarce for more than two years.
Now, for the first time, solar physicists might understand why.
At an American Astronomical Society press conference on 17 June in Boulder,
Colorado, researchers announced that a jet stream deep inside the sun is
migrating slower than usual through the star's interior, giving rise to the
current lack of sunspots.
Rachel Howe and Frank Hill of the National Solar Observatory (NSO) in Tucson,
Arizona, used a technique called helioseismology to detect and track the jet
stream down to depths of 7 000 km below the surface of the sun. The sun generates
new jet streams near its poles every 11 years, they explained. The streams
migrate slowly from the poles to the equator and when a jet stream reaches the
critical latitude of 22 degrees, new-cycle sunspots begin to appear.

was unable to do the news broadcast a week or so back, so Wayne, VK7FWAY
stepped up and offered to help out Winston.
This was Wayne's first time at doing a broadcast relay and was very happy with
his first effort, receiving 13 call backs at the conclusion.
Congratulations Wayne, for taking the time and effort to bring the news to\
the North West.
Thanks also go to Winston for his ongoing dedication in bringing broadcasts
to the North West coast.

A Russian rocket launched from Plesetsk on May 23 carried a number of payloads
to orbit, including a new Amateur Radio satellite named Yubileiny -- Russian
for jubilee -- since christened Radio Sputnik 30 (RS-30). Operational details
are vague at this time. Amateurs throughout the world report receiving signals
at 435.315 and 435.215 MHz; some report reception of CW telemetry while others
report what appear to be image transmissions from the satellite. RS-30 is
orbiting at a maximum altitude of 1500 km, creating a substantial
communications footprint below.
The satellite will broadcast audio and video about the history of the Soviet
and Russian space programs, as well as signals imitating those broadcast by
Sputnik in 1957. According to the satellite's launch team, "The motive for
development of the Yubileiny small spacecraft was the 50th anniversary of the
first space satellite. With the help of that satellite, the new space systems
and equipment are expected to get flight qualification, and radio-amateurs
all over the world will be able to receive information on the history of
space development and domestic cosmonautics achievements."

UK Armed Forces Day June 27
The United Kingdom's first Armed Forces Day June 27.
The first UK Armed Forces Day is an opportunity for the United Kingdom
to show their support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces
community.
Effective radio communications are vital to armed forces and Radio Amateurs
have played a significant part in developing such systems.
One such was Chelmsford radio amateur Anthony Martin, M1FDE who passed away
just last year. He was a pioneer of the Personal Role Radio (PRR) which was
introduced into the British Army in 2002.

In 1939 the radio equipment of all radio amateurs was ordered to be
confiscated for the duration of the war, but many amateurs became
Voluntary Interceptors in their own homes. These VIs assisted the
Allies in their task of intercepting encrypted Enigma messages
transmitted in Morse code, which were then passed to the code
breakers at Bletchley Park. The Scarborough Special Events group will
be on the air as GB70VI during the weekend 27th to 28th June to mark
the commencement of the amateur radio Voluntary Interceptors scheme.
This event will coincide with Armed Forces Day on 27 June when
Scarborough will be hosting the largest event planned for the region.
It will be an opportunity for everyone to pay tribute to our Armed
Forces, past, present and future. Activity will be on HF SSB and CW.

Over the weekend of 3rd to 5th July, Birmingham Scout County will be
holding their 'Live the Magic Camp' at Blackwell Court near
Bromsgrove Worcestershire. The camp will be attended by around 3,000
Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Leaders from the Birmingham area. Apart
from the usual scouting activities, special event station GB4LTM will
be active over the weekend, giving all present a chance to experience
amateur radio. GB4TLM plans to run HF, 2m and 70cm as well as
Echolink and will offer Radio Orienteering as an activity.
GB0LS will be on the air on 4th July at the Luton Scouts in Action
event in St Georges Square, Luton. The event is to promote scouting
in the town and to recruit additional adult volunteers. They will be
QRV on 80, 40 and 2m between 10.00 and 16.30. In addition to amateur
radio there will be pioneering, a climbing and abseil wall, a cooking
competition, activity zones for the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts and
refreshments on sale. The event will close with a cannonball run race
involving all of the young people.

UK Government overlooks RAYNET in emergency plans
The Government's recent Digital Britain report speaks of the
importance of resilient communications networks and the need for
regular tests of emergency communications systems.
Mention is made of a planned major test in late 2009 to manage and
recover from a major loss of network capability. The RSGB regrets
that Government communications planners seem to have completely
overlooked the valuable resource that RAYNET can offer in such
emergency situations. Unfortunately RAYNET does not seem to be
completely integrated into the nation's emergency communications
planning.
