A new amateur radio wiki has been started by Tim VK4YEH. The intention is that
the wiki will become an online encyclopaedia for hams, rather than just pages
of links.
Articles of all sorts are welcome, but be aware that the philosophy of a wiki
is that articles can be and probably will be edited by others.
Tim is very keen to have LOCAL amateurs contribute to the wiki and to make
contact with amateurs who have the knowledge and skills to develop the site.
The URL is www.amateur-radio-wiki.net
Tim can be contacted by email at vk4yeh@qmail.com
He will respond to all emails.
Brisbane Area WICEN is set to take over the Queensland Digital Group packet
and Voice networks as the QDG Inc. can no longer maintain the networks and
will run out of funds within twelve months.
In order to keep the radio sites for Amateur use QDG reluctantly decided to
close down, this way they are able to pass on the networks as a going concern,
complete with some funds for maintenance and on going technical support.
A number of QDG Inc. members have joined WICEN to help maintain the equipment.
This decision has taken over three years while they have tried other means to
keep the networks going but this is the only logical choice left.
The qdg'S VK4DGQ packet mailserver will also close, due to the decline in
packet usage.
The Queensland Digital Group has started the slow process of shutting down
feeds to Queensland and interstate packet BBS. Invisible to users, VK4DGQ
has none the less been an integral part of the world wide packet radio network
for twenty years and will be missed by many hams.
As the era comes to a close, so to does the VK4TX packet radio BBS run by
Neville Mills. First on line in Maryborough in 1982 the well known BBS was
soon attracting packet users in the Brisbane region. The BBS was used by many
in the 1980's and 1990's and in the last few years, as a forwarding gateway.
Actually the first digipeaters operational in the region were at Black
Mountain and Mt Kanigan in 1982
B4AB (site now known as VK4RZC) Maleny licensed in 1984/5
B4AC (site now known as VK4RZB) Mt Cootha licensed in 1987
QDG was incorporated for more than 30 years. The infrastructure will remain
operational with thanks to the Brisbane Area WICEN group. Users of
the system are encouraged to become members of WICEN to support the
continuation of the network.
After transferring their packet and voice networks to Brisbane Area WICEN the
QDG will un-incorporate, with a new QDG club emerging as a social group
dedicated to the technical side of Amateur Radio.
The well known QDG Web site will continue to be maintained as will hosting of
other clubs pages.

CLUBBING - WITH RAY VK4ZW BRISBANE AR CLUB
BARC
The Brisbane Amateur Radio Club has relocated all of its meetings and its
club station from the old rooms at Annerley to its new permanent location
at the Maritime Museum at Southbank.
Club meetings are held twice each month. An evening business and lecture
meeting is held on the fourth Friday of each month, from 7pm onwards and an
afternoon social and activity meeting is held on the second Saturday of each
month from 2pm onwards, both at the new Maritime Museum location.
Access to the museum for club members and visitors is via the rear gate
without the usual admission fee. There is adequate parking and the Ferry and
City-Cat stops are close by. For the Friday evening meetings, when the
Museum is closed, the rear gate will be manned by a club member until
7:30 pm.
Late-comers arriving after that time can gain access by calling on 146.550MHz
FM simplex to the club station VK4BA.
The group has erected permanent antennas at the new location and has been
operating the club station VK4BA during the Saturday afternoon meetings.
Planning for BARCFEST 2008 is now well advanced. Again this year the
convention will be held at the Mount Gravatt Show Grounds on Saturday
10th May. Please make a special note in your diaries for the convention day
we hope to see everybody there again this year.
The BARC committee wishes to welcome its three new members David VK4DFC,
Bill VK4TWS and Stuart VK4FSJL to the group.
The club has a website with information, application forms and for e-mail
which can be found at http://www.qsl.net/vk4ba and also produces QSP, our
monthly magazine, which is emailed to all members and is available to
download on the website. Both website and monthly magazine are managed by
Kevin VKZR
Finally, the dates for the next two BARC club meetings will be the Saturday
afternoon of the 15th March, from 2pm onwards and the Friday evening of
28th March from 7 pm onwards. As always all visitors, listeners and new
members will be made very welcome. We hope to see you there at the
Maritime Museum.

Despite 43 degree heat last Saturday, the antenna construction crew completed
the new 10 and 15 metre antennas and on a much cooler Sunday the 20 metre
antenna was completed.
Initial testing indicates that both the 10 and 15 metre antennas are within
95% of design parameters. John, VK4YJB and Peter, VK4TGV provided members
at last MondayÂ’s meeting, a brief slide show of the detailing the progress
of the antennas before members set out to find the “foxÂö hidden by Ken
VK4FKEN.
John VK4YJB sporting a new homebrew antenna mounted 3 metres high on the
top of his work truck, won the day. Roger, VK4IPE and Celia, VK4LIZ came
next with Charlie, VK4YZ and Peter, VK4TAA both arriving just a little later.
A late start and light rain ruined a second “fox huntÂö and members returned
to the Club about 10 pm for a hot cuppa and light snack before heading home.
Members are reminded to notify Club Secretary, Peter VK4TAA about their
attendance at the John Moyle weekend and to contact Andy, VK4KY about
the seafood feast on the Friday night.
