 Ian Tinney VK4KAD

Ian Laurance Tinney was born in Brisbane on July 24, 1948. Among his
interests in life were amateur radio, photography, broadcasting and computer
technology, and wandering the Queensland Outback.

He had a special interest in the history of droving and early settlers.
He grew up in St Lucia.

Even after the death of his mother, father and brother, the St Lucia house
remained his home until after his retirement he moved to Crow’s Nest, on the
 Darling Downs.

Ian Tinney started training in radio engineering at the ABC’s Toowong studios
in Brisbane in early 1966. At that time he also joined the Royal Australian
 Navy Reserve in communication.

Away from the ABC from 1969 to 1975, he worked in electronics and behind the
stage on the sets of major productions, including for J. C. Williamsons.

Then in training and management with the ABC he enjoyed strong connections
with the bush, including as manager of the ABC’s western Queensland operation
at Longreach. Ian Tinney put his photographic ability and his interest in the
Outback together producing a popular pictorial calendar for the ABC which
 supported the Queensland drought appeal.

He retired from the ABC in 2001 settling outside Crow’s Nest. With two horses,
dog Abby gradually he felt at home, blending into the local community,
becoming an active member and communications officer for the Crow’s Nest Bush
Fire Brigade and gaining many good friends.

With his technical background he was active on HF and presented some
interesting talks to the Darling Downs Radio Club.

Ian Tinney was a great supporter of the Drovers Camp at Camooweal. Over the
years he collaborated with Bruce Simpson to help produce books and audio
material dealing with the outback and early settlers. Among the Outback books,
he provided photographs and expertise for Packhorse Drover, published by
ABC Books in 1996, and was co-author for “Where the Dead Men lieö
 (ABC Books 2003).

After an extended and tough fight with cancer he passed away at Toowoomba
Hospice on the 9th of May.

His efforts to help his many friends, dedication to broadcasting and love of
 the bush are well remembered.

Today I am repeating the words of Michael Owen, VK3KI, Wireless Institute
President on an important initiative of the Institute, broadcast in Michael's
2nd report on the recent AGM.

"One item .....was the announcement that particular emphasis would be placed
on emergency communications during the forthcoming year, with three directors
led by Phil Wait as Coordinator with WIA RTO Fred Swainston to formulate and
accredit amateurs gaining nationally recognised competencies relevant to the
 provision of emergency services."

This is an area where our colleagues from the ARRL have lead the way in
providing accredited emcomm training. On the local level, having a national
standard means that state boundaries are no longer a barrier to recruitment
of volunteer radio operators in times of need. At the club level, this
accreditation will provide the credibility to local government and other
organisations that AR is both capable and competant.

Have you looked at the ARRL web site lately? The League has a dedicated area
devoted to publicity and promotion which is maintained by volunteers. By
being able to recruit people with skills in graphic arts, copywriting and
video, the League has a mind boggling collection of items for use by clubs
and members in recruiting and disseminating information on ham radio. The
League even has training available for club publicists to be able prepare
material for use by the broadcast media.

There is a far greater number of amateurs to draw from in the US than in VK
but could we draw on the skills of our members and follow the example of the
ARRL? Could this be an area that the Institute can co-ordinate in it's support
for clubs? Could the Institute obtain a licence to use materials developed by
other amateur bodies - with appropriate adaption to VK? Do you know how to
prepare a press release for your local media outlets? Would it help to have
a training package to help your club promote its activities to the wider
 community?

Maybe this is an area you can address in your club's submission to the
 Institute on promoting AR.

Remember that the next meeting of GCEG will be held at 7.30p.m. in the
basement rooms of Leading Edge Electronics, Reef Street, Gympie, Thursday
 4th June.

The Monday night net is held at 7.30p.m. each week on VK4RCM, 146.725MHz.

 Ex VE7CNT Silent Key

Recently we advised of an interesting guest speaker we had at the club that
showed video footage of his interesting life travelling around the world
 drilling for mineral samples.

This was Ingemar Gustaffson who was formerly licensed as a canadian amateur.

Unfortunately Ingemar was accidentally killed while crossing a road not far
from his home on Monday night. He had recently told one of our members that
he really enjoyed going through the old footage of his life and it brought
back fond memories. Also he had recently planned to travel back to Canada
for various reasons but he was going to renew his license while there and get
a resiprocal license on his return to Australia.

Sadly that was not to be.

Our deepest sympathy is extended to his wife and two sons.

 Vale Ingemar
