 FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS

 Bob Moule VK4JZB

Bob Moule VK4JZB went Silent Key on Thursday 7th May, following a
big battle with the big C. Although he was a bit quiet on air towards the
end Bob maintained his callsign to the end, a callsign synonymous with
service to the community and experimentation on air.

Bob was a past Secretary of the Cairns Amateur Radio Club.
Bob was one of the pioneering packeteers of Far North Queensland,
was one of the proponents of Tropical DX on 6metres, VHF and UHF bands
and also dabbled in other digital modes as they became available.

Known as the JeZzaBel (a phonic representation of his callsign) Bob
also assisted in arranging many radio amateur happenings, including
Australia's first VHF communications during a bungee jump.
Bob helped arrange the jump but was sensible enough not to do it (another
mad ham who likes dairy milk chocolate did the jump with Bob watching on).

Bob also served the community in a number of roles including
the executive of the local RSL and the Postmaster of Kuranda.

Bob served in the Royal Australian Navy during the Vietnam War
serving on Warship Hobart (March to September 1967) and
Warship Torrens (February to March 1972).
Bob was in the first intake of apprentices to attend HMAS Nirimba.
Bob retired from the Navy with the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

Tributes to Bob were transmitted by John VK4JKL, current President
of the Cairns Amateur Radio Club, Ron VK4EMF, current Treasurer
of the Tablelands Radio and Electronics Club and Dale VK4DMC,
current Secretary of the Tablelands Radio and Electronics Club, during
the May 10th Sunday evening North Queensland Net on 3605.4kHz.

The final farewell to Bob VK4JZB was carried out on Tuesday May 12th
with a celebration of his life at Centenary Park, Kuranda, Far North
 Queensland.

Bob is survived by board of control Kaye, daughters Siale and Tathra
 and several grandchildren.

 Vale Bob Moule VK4JZB.

Last Thursday the Gympie Communications and Electronics Group had the
pleasure of hosting Jeff Johnson, VK4XJJ, of "Jeff's Walk" fame and
they were joined by a contingent of members from the Maryborough
Electronics and Radio Group (MERG). Apart from the nuts and bolts of
a general meeting Jeff had copies of his book, personally signed, for
 distribution.

For the GCEG members who have ordered copies of Jeff's book and
missed the meeting, Paul, VK4YPM, has them for collection at his
work QTH. Remember that Jeff has supplied these books at a discount
to radio clubs in order that they can be used as a local fund raiser.
 Many thanks, Jeff.

The Easy pal SSTV repeater project is proceeding as mentioned
previously on QNEWS. Erik, VK4AES has completed the refurbishment of
a computer which is now at the QTH of Roger, VK4BNQ undergoing burn
in and testing. Bob, VK4MR is engaged in providing a bullet proof
internet connection for use when the system is moved to his shack at
 Chatsworth.

Around the Wide Bay area there seem to be some quietly smiling
amateurs after BARCFEST, last Saturday. Reports are that some nice
bargains made their way in this direction.

Now here is a question........as reported on WIA National News, last
week, DAB+ is the emerging broadcast technology coming to VKland. As
many, many tyro home brewers cut their teeth on making crystal sets
and going by internet sites the search for the ultimate crystal set
goes on, what is going to supply signals for these terribly green
receivers, in the future, and is there ever going to be something as
elegantly simple as the crystal set for DAB+?

Remember that the SSTV repeater is on air on 146.625MHz, with pix
available for viewing on Gympie Amateur Radio web site. The Monday
evening net comes courtesy of Jason's, VK4MIH, repeater on
 146.725MHz at 7.30 p.m.

Hello I'm Ray VK4CF with news from Redcliffe Radio Club.

Next Monday the Redcliffe technical talk will be a presentation by
Ron Merring VK4DD on 2 metre home brew amplifiers.

This is a most anticipated presentation as Ron has built a successful
website about his kits to make high powered 2 metre amplifiers.

His presentation will commence about 8 pm and members and visitors
should be at the Redcliffe clubhouse by 7.30 pm to get the best seat
and the best parking. The club is located at MacFarlane Park in
 Klingner Rd, Kippa Ring.
 (UBD Map 91 Ref G 1).

A visitor to the club was Mr. Ernie Park from the Caboolture Warbirds
who advised the club about the forth coming Warbirds Aircraft Museum
open day to be held at Caboolture Air Field on 2nd August. The club
will be providing a static display in association with the members of
the Caboolture Radio Club. With some 10,000 people expected to
attend, the display will provide a good introduction about our hobby
of amateur radio. Sandy, VK4NKX, will be the coordinator for the
 open day.

Glenn VK4FZ announced at last Monday's meeting that he would not be
standing as club treasurer this year. The club's AGM will be held on
Monday 15 June 2009. A call for nominations for committee positions
was made with all interested members contacting club secretary Peter,
 VK4TAA.

A further reminder of the Working bee on Sat 30th May. On the
afternoon of Friday 29th starting at 2.30pm, the site will be
prepared, ready for the arrival of the concrete early Saturday
 morning.

The club will be camping at the Murrembong Scout camp during the
Remembrance Day weekend, 15/16 August. The campsite will operate as
VK4IZ and a second station will be operating from the clubhouse as
 VK4RC.

Until next week, this is Ray VK4CF.

 October Camp Catchup

The October camp catch-up this year will be held at Maidenwell
Observatory on 31st October and 1st November. There will be a spit
roast at the pub and a guided tour through the observatory. At last
report Camping will be on the local cricket oval. Maidenwell is
located in the Brisbane valley west of Yarraman on the Kingaroy
Cooyar road. If you have never heard of it, well it's a good excuse
to find out a bit more.

Recent Antenna work at the Club Rooms

The club installed a 20m monoband beam for JOTA last year and gee
whiz it was hard to get a match on 20m. A new gamma match was
manufactured in readiness for installation as it was thought this
 was the problem.
Thanks to Toby VK4FTTR and Bill VK4WB the gamma match was installed
recently but that was only half of the problem. The feedline was in
two pieces joined by a very wet and loose PL259 barrel connector and
one of the pieces of coax was in fact 75 ohm coax. The original
installer of the coax is believed to be Richard VK4RY and I can say
that on air because he is currently on holidays in Victoria, so
unless this gets into the national news I am safe.

Until next time, if there is one after that last comment, this is
Gordon VK4VP from the Sunshine Coast Amateur Radio Club.
