With the John Moyle Field Day put to bed and only a few days left for the
submission of contest logs the messages of field and portable operations
keep coming. When Amateur Radio Magazine arrived here was Jim Linton's
article on Recom. Jim had previously spoken of the Recom activation, during
the Victorian Bush Fires, on WIA National News and it is enlightening to have
the greater detail concerning a group of amateurs putting their skills to
work for the community benefit.
Last week, Jim also spoke of the activation of the Sunshine Coast sponsored
Special Communications Group in providing communications support during the
clean up of the oil spilled along the Queensland Coast as a result of
Cyclone Hamish. Again we have amateurs going the extra mile in providing
community support through the skills they have as part of this hobby.
After today's news broadcast, the members of the Maryborough Electronics and
Radio Group are conducting an exercise based on a catostrophic disaster
scenario when the challenge to radio operators is to get their stations on
air with bits of salvage available and the presumption of no mains power.
If you are in Maryborough and you see some-one talking into a microphone
connected to the proverbial shopping trolley, well that is part of the
exercise in adaptability and improvisation.
This is also the month in which the world recognises the relevance of amateur
radio to the wider community. p.47 of the April Amateur Radio mag. contains
the official IARU message concerning World Amateur Radio Day, 18 April.
This message is also included in the WIA news pages of the web site.
Remember, the motto for this year is
Amateur Radio: Your Resource in Disaster and Emergency Communication.
To paraphrase the words of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, "Ask not what your hobby
can do for you but what you can do for Amateur Radio."

Channel 14 UHF CB call "CQ MERG"
"What are you doing after the news broadcast today?"
"The members of 'MERGE', the Maryborough Electronics & Radio Group in
Queensland, will be looking around their homes for whatever may be
thought to be lying around after a catastrophic disaster."
"This disaster could be Cyclone, Fire, Flood, Earthquake, Tsunami or
even Invasion by Extra Terrestrials"
"Armed with all manner of bits and pieces, they will be attempting to
build Antennas, Power sources and whatever else may be required to
establish radio communications with the outside world, on Amateur and CB
frequencies."
"This is the third such exercise, and previous events have resulted in
such weird and wonderful concoctions as VHF and UHF Moxon rectangles and
Yagis made from wire coat hangers and rebuilt TV antennas, HF Verticals
made from the remains of Gazebos, HF dipoles and Quads from the remains
of Hills Hoists and a catamaran built from two canoes, complete with
mast and VHF Marine radio."
"'MERGE' challenges other clubs and individuals in Australia, And the
rest of the world for that matter, to do likewise and send details
and/or photo's of your creations to vk4tpt(AT)wia.org.au and they will
become part of an article or series in AR magazine."
"So, if you can figure out how to convert a Shopping Trolley (There's
always one of them somewhere, no matter where you go), into a Reflector
and bounce a signal off the Moon, or if you can convert a Generator Set
to run on Bundaberg Rum (What a waste), then 'MERGE' would like to hear
from you."
"'MERGE' reminds everyone that this is not a contest, but rather an
exercise in Lateral thinking, much as would have faced POW's in World War 2
when they built Receivers, and even Transmitters, whilst in captivity."

Hello I’m Ray VK4CF with news from Redcliffe Radio Club.
Last Monday night the Queensland TV program EXTRA showed the story of 9 year
old, Nicholas O’Sullivan, who undertook his foundation licence exam at the
John Moyle field day.
The program interviewed Nicholas, his Mum, Janette, who also passed her
foundation theory exam in the field, and with Dad Shaun VK4FY. Both proud
parents provided the necessary tutoring to assist Nicholas to complete his
examination preparation.
The program showed not only the hobby of amateur radio and also how amateur
radio provided communications support for a range of natural disasters.
Club secretary, Peter, VK4TAA was also interviewed on the program and briefly
outlined the requirements of the Foundation licence and what Nicholas had
achieved by passing his licence.
For a 2 minute segment, it was good publicity for our hobby and was a fine
inspiration for young people to follow. It is believed that Nicholas is the
youngest Ham in Queensland.
Janette is now preparing for her Practical exam and there is news that
Shaun’s daughter is now trying to copy her brother and also obtain her
Foundation licence. With 4 amateurs in the family, Shaun will have deal
with some local QRM and new radios for the family.
At last Monday night’s meeting a range of speakers including the club’s
contest manager Andy, VK4KY, George VK4XY, Charlie VK4YZ provided all members
with a range of techniques in how to participating in nets and the skills and
tricks when contesting from home. The discussion covered both phone and
CW techniques and provided members with first hand information that will be
put to good use over the next few months with the with the Harry Angle Sprint
competition & the Jack files competition.
Don’t forget the usual trivia night each Wednesday on the Redcliffe 70 cm
repeater starting at 7.30 pm local time. Don’t forget the 91.5 hZ tone!
Until next week, this is Ray VK4CF.
