Forecast Discussion

There is a wind chill advisory in effect for this morning through the afternoon today. A wind chill warning will be in effect for tonight through noon tomorrow. Temperatures will warm briefly today, with the westerly winds. However, late this afternoon, a cold front will descend from above, and winds will shift to the NW. As a result, the area will receive an icy blast of arctic air, plunging temperatures into the negative teens. An upper level trough situated overhead the great lakes region will spawn a low pressure system that will develop off the Mid Atlantic coast, and will intensify as it travels north and east, passing to our south and east, affecting the summits very little. However, a strong area of high pressure will nestle its way into the area. The summits will clear tonight and remain in the clear through tomorrow. With a departing low and an approaching high, the pressure gradient will tighten, and winds will be on the rise. With the arctic air mass in place, wind chill values will drop to fifty five below at times. Frost bite can occur in ten minutes or less in these conditions. Visibility will also be limited, with blowing snow and the summits in and out of the clouds. A weak warm front will be approaching late tomorrow, increasing cloudiness and moderating temperatures a bit.
