Forecast Discussion

High pressure will be build over the region today and the summits will end up finally breaking from the clouds after going in and out early this morning. Recent surface observations are indicating that close mountain valleys to our west and north-northeast have low overcast conditions. This is well supported with some forecast soundings until just after noon. This means that when the summits do clear we will see some partial undercast conditions before the layer erodes this afternoon. Winds picked up quickly this morning and will remain strong and gusty before gradually decreasing this afternoon and evening. This means that blowing and drifting will occur which will make for poor visibility above treeline at times. Temperatures and winds will combines to produce wind chills of 20-30 below early this morning, then moderating to 10-20 below later today as temperatures warm slightly and winds decrease. Skies may clouds up again briefly this afternoon but the trend will be for decreasing cloudiness. High pressure will move overhead during the overnight hours and starlit skies will prevail. Winds overnight will be a bit lighter and wind chills will be 10-20 degrees below zero. High pressure will crest the region and head out to sea tomorrow and skies will become increasingly cloudy especially during the afternoon and evening hours. After a cold start tomorrow temperatures will climb to the upper 20s and wind chills will be around 10 below early and around the zero degree mark late. Our next weather maker will be taking shape off the Carolina coast and begin moving rapidly north. Models are in good agreement with the overall scenario, but some of the finer details still need to be sorted out.
