APT, DIGITAL and GEOSTATIONARY WEEKLY STATUS.
==========================================
Author : Douglas S Deans. dsdeans@tiscali.co.uk
Section 4 has updates.
SECTION 1: POLAR APT/LRPT REPORT -- 21st January 2008
============================================
Satellite Frequency (MHz) Status Image Quality
NOAA 15 137.500 (APT) on good
NOAA 17 137.620 (APT) on good
NOAA 18 137.100 (APT) on good
Metop-A 137.100 (LRPT) off see Note 3
CHANGES SINCE LAST REPORT.
None.
THIS WEEK'S POSSIBLE EVENTS.
None expected.
NOTES.
1. Three of the older NOAA weather satellites which have been
decommissioned and are tumbling freely are know to sporadically put
out
a carrier on 137.500 MHz. The satellites are TIROS-N, NOAA 6 and NOAA
9
When the relevant footprints overlap this will cause interference to
NOAA 15 when active on this frequency.
Latest report below.
29/04/2007 :- No interference noted recently from any of the above
satellites. (My thanks to Patrik Tast for this report).
2. NOAA 16's APT transmission system failed a few months after launch.
3. Metop-A's A-side LRPT transmitter has failed. Currently the redundant
B-side transmitter is off until further notice (No further service
expected due to interference with HIRS instrument).
4. NOAA 14 was decommissioned on 23rd May 2007.
5. NOAA 12 was decommissioned on 10th August 2007.
6. Elements are available from :-
http://www.space-track.org and
http://celestrak.com/NORAD/elements/
LAUNCHES.
NOAA N' launch.....February 2009.
Douglas Deans.
Dunblane, Scotland.
SECTION 2: POLAR HRPT/AHRPT REPORT -- 21st January 2008
==============================================
CHANGES SINCE LAST REPORT.
None.
THIS WEEK'S POSSIBLE EVENTS.
None expected.
Satellite Frequency Antenna Mode Image Quality
(MHz)
NOAA 15 1702.5 Omni HRPT Weak
NOAA 16 1702.5 LHCP HRPT Mixed ( note 4)
NOAA 17 1707.0 RHCP HRPT Poor (note 3)
NOAA 18 1698.0 RHCP HRPT Good
Feng Yun 1D 1700.4 RHCP CHRPT Good
Metop-A 1701.3 RHCP AHRPT off (note 6)
NOTES.
1. NOAA 14 was decommissioned on 23rd June 2007.
2. NOAA 12 was decommissioned on 10th August 2007.
3. Problems have developed with STX-3 (1707 MHZ). Power has dropped from
approx. 8W to about 2.4W resulting on a greatly reduced signal
strength.
4. On Friday 19th September 2003 NOAA 16 developed AVHRR synch. problems
similar to those on NOAA 14 (and previously NOAA 15).
Since then reports have been mixed. Some periods of good data, some
poor.
UPDATE: Scan motor performance has recently improved.
5. The following HRPT transmitter changes were effective from
30th August 2005. The re-assignments were :-
NOAA 16 changed from STX1 (1698 MHz) to STX2 (1702.5 MHz).
NOAA 18 changed from STX3 (1707 MHz) to STX1 (1698 MHz).
6. Due to a transmitter failure the AHRPT direct readout service is
off until further notice ( this also includes ATOVS etc.).
LAUNCHES.
NOAA N' launch.....February 2009.
Feng Yun 3 ....... uncertain.
Douglas Deans.....with thanks to Lawrence Harris for his regular updates
and
reports.

Two Meteosat-9 North-South orbit inclination manoeuvres followed by a spin
rate adjustment will be performed on 04 and 05/02/08 at 22:20 UTC and
22:05
UTC respectively.
Each one of the two manoeuvres may be followed by up to 24 hours of
degraded
quality of Meteosat-9 SEVIRI images and meteorological products .
The following new products from US data providers are now available on
EUMETCast:
NASA-SERVIR fire monitoring and forecast products for Mesoamerica,

The products are available on the EUMETCast data channel Americas-CH1
(Europe and the Americas) and access is via registration with the User
Service Helpdesk on ops@eumetsat.int
On 21/01/08 at 09:00 UTC we will start parallel dissemination on
EUMETCast-Europe of Meteosat-9 image data, the current operational service
containing the existing "spectral" radiance definition and a parallel
validation service containing the new "effective" radiance definition.
For more information and a detailed schedule please see:

IODC.
Due to a Meteosat-7 East-West station keeping manoeuvre on 22/01/08 at
22:58
UTC, users may observe degraded image quality for up to 6 hours after the
manoeuvre.
Due to essential ground segment maintenance on 23/01/08, there will be no
IODC image data or IODC DCP data available between 08:30 and 12:30 UTC.
