Forecast Discussion

Surface high pressure will begin to build in from the west today. Currently, winds are shifting more northwesterly which will continue the inundation of cold northern air adding to the cold pool of air already in place over New England this morning. As the day progresses and the high builds in further, winds will begin to shift more westerly dampening the cold air draw and pushing in drier, clearer weather. As the dry air works in, clouds will have the summits in intermittent fog before total clearing is expected by midday. With a more westerly flow starting, temperatures will bottom out this morning then begin to warm things slowly this afternoon. Overnight, the surface high crests and ridging in the mid and upper levels will soon follow. This will further dampen winds and keep things dry overnight and fairly clear through the night. The only thing that may produce a few clouds is a surface low well to our north that will lift a warm front across Quebec. This feature will be far enough removed not to produce any showers, just clouds. As the high begins to slide east overnight, a warm southwesterly flow will continue to warm things on the summit into tomorrow. A low pressure system trekking up towards the Great Lakes tomorrow will spread clouds across the region which will thicken lower as the day progresses. By tomorrow afternoon, a warm front associated with this low may bring a few snow showers. The main forecast problem today is temperatures. I feel that the models have things warming a bit to fast since initialization had warmer temperatures this morning. Therefore, everything has been adjusted by at least 5 degrees lower than model projections based on past experience. With all the cold air combining with winds, we will keep a wind chill warning in effect this morning until this afternoon then replace that with a wind chill advisory from this afternoon until tomorrow afternoon. Wind chills today will be 55-65 below early rising to 40-50 below by days end then continuing to rise to 25-35 below by sunrise tomorrow before ending the day at 15-25 below tomorrow.
