...Fall weather becoming well established across much of the nation...
A strong cold front passed through the Mid-Atlantic region and the
Northeast on Friday, ushering in a much more pleasant autumnal airmass and
a relief to the recent late season record breaking heat wave. Many
locations across the Northeast and northern Great Lakes are having their
first frost or freeze of the season. However, the frontal boundary has
slowed down in its southward progress across the interior Southeast U.S.
and the result will be a continuation of hot weather from Texas to the
southeast Coast with some additional record highs likely. With the
exception of some heavier showers near portions of the southeast coast,
this front is not expected to produce widespread rainfall given the
relatively dry atmosphere.
Upper level troughing and a pronounced shortwave disturbance crossing the
northern Plains will sustain an intensifying surface low from North Dakota
to Hudson Bay through the weekend. The cold front from this storm system
will bring in another cool and autumnal airmass across much of the central
U.S. and this boundary should eventually reach farther south than the
first cold front that recently exited the East Coast. Periods of rain are
likely for the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes region on Saturday, and
heavier rain is likely to develop on Sunday from Arkansas to the Ohio
Valley as the front intercepts deeper moisture. There may be some strong
thunderstorms across portions of the southern Plains as the front crosses
this region.
