Forecast Discussion
A warm frontal passage has temperatures warming on the summit, and yesterday, the daily record high of 34 degrees F, set in 1950, was tied. A cold front, spanning the length of the country, will sweep across the state today With warmer air aloft, and temperatures at the summit below freezing, precipitation falling will start as freezing rain and drizzle, and as the cold front passes, change over to snow. The bulk of the precipitation will occur through today, with lingering snow showers tapering off overnight. Winds will shift from the S to the W today, and an icy blast of air will ride in on the westerly winds and temperatures will drop into the single digits below zero on the summits overnight. High pressure will quickly build, clearing the summits and the skies above. The pressure gradient will tighten, and winds will be strong and gusty through today and into tomorrow morning. With temperatures plunging into sub zero range, and winds in the 60-80 mph range, wind chills will be dangerously low, causing a wind chill advisory to be in effect for the higher summits at midnight tonight through noon tomorrow. Tomorrow, winds will relax as high pressure begins to crest overhead the region, and temperatures will moderate. This will improve wind chill values. Freezing fog, strong winds, and new snow will limit visibility above tree line.
