There are a few of those AV sites around that offer a "free" scan and
then "find" 400 or so dangerous entries on your hard disk. They delete 6
or so of them and then demand payment for the removal of the remainder. I
delete them those "offers". They seem to be an advertising scam but
harmless as far as that goes.

I use two AV and antimalware programs - AVG and Spybot both of which are
free and both of which are very effective at spotting suspicious entries.
AV can be set to update daily. Double Click seems to bob up every now and
then. I don't know that it is all that harmful. I delete it with Spybot
and have never noticed any ill effect from it. Some of those found are
cookies so I am told..

I use the same computer for everything and have had very little problem
except for two instances. One I mentioned in another post with Facebook
and the other was when the AV program I was using (AVAST) sent out a
corrupt update to their program which labelled most programs on the HDD as
viruses. They were quick to issue a correction but their mistake did
some damage to many people over here.I had already deleted a couple of
programs on the advice of AVAST before I became suspicious and stopped
deleting. The UK and USA escaped apparently because the bad update was
sent out deep in their night time when most users were asleep. . We got it
during the day. I got rid of AVAST aand went back to AVG.
From emails I receive here AVG would be the most commonly used by those
from whom I receive emails, and I get those at the rate of about 40 a
day..

I have a copy of AdAware which, whenever and wherever I go on the net,
seems to find two files among the Cookies called 'DoubleClick' and labels
them as Spyware then asks me if I want top delete them.
G4YUU reported something very familiar with his AV soft. "Pay us nnnnn
and
we'll send you the update to remove these virii we've just found."
Call me Mr Paranoia if you like but, doesn't it seem as though some of
the
people working in the lucrative anti virus market, just might be
putting
out stories about the latest viruses and, possibly, even creating a
few
themselves. it would be in their interests.
A few years ago, we got a message on packet from a station with
the
callsign APR1L. I deleted before reading. According to messages
after
that, a lot of PCs were in severe difficulties as a result of the virus
in
this message - even having to fit new HDDs. (?)
