VHF propagation across the Great Australian Bight has been disappointing
this DX season but with one exceptional day, a very good sporadic E
opening when the Australian distance record for 144 was broken with
record transcontinental contacts by VK6BE and VK6WG to VK2, and a new
record fo VK1 set.
31.12.08: from 1008 WADT I worked on 144 mHz:
VK2KOL, VK5THA, VK2BXT, VK2BCC, VK2ZT, VK5DJ, VK5BC, VK5KCX, VK5BJE,
VK5KC,VK2DAG, VK5AIM, VK5GF, VK5NZ, VK5OZ, VK2FZ, VK2DVZ, VK5ZBK, VK5ACY,
VK3AXH, VK5BM, VK5AZY,VK1ZQR, VK1BG.
Four states on 144? It would have been incredible a few short years ago.
These were all on 144 mHz with the longest distance at 5080+ km. This
broke the Australian record set by me in January 2008, BUT VK6WG also in
Albany also worked him and so he has the record with a very short distance
between us, under 3 km. The VK1 distance record was less than 1000 km and
that was smashed, again VK6WG just pipping me at the post.
Both Wally and I have the same grid square location.
In the January 2008 record breaking contact signals were very poor to VK2
and only one station was worked; this time they were up and over S9.
Since? A couple of poor openings on SIX and nothing much on Two.
Cheers,
Bob VK6BE
