Uhh,

In the VX8 setup for APRS, menu item 22 allows you to select the 
symbol that you wish to show
on the map. There are many different selections available (I dont' 
know if the entire symbol set is
there or not).  Selecting the symbol you wish from the list will 
format the APRS message correctly.

It's probably set for the default (which is 'YY').
