1a. UiView Weather
    Posted by: "g8zqa" peter.stonebridge@tiscali.co.uk g8zqa

After around 4 years absence from UiView, due to a wrangle about an
insurance claim for a lightning zapped packet modem, I have given up
and bought a new Kenwood TM 710E. I have a Davis Vantage PRO weather
station and wondered if anyone had successfully hooked this up to one
of the Kenwood units please? As far as I can see from all the
description of this rig, you can input weather into it via a jack plug
socket. The only output from my Davis unit is a telephone socket into
which you plug the corresponding end of a cable which terminates in a 9
pin D socket which in turn can be plugged into a COM port on the
computer for handling in a programme called Weatherlink. I believe that
this could also be terminated in a USB plug as well, but the suppliers
who deal in this line of goods don't seem to know anyway!
I just thought that it would be nice to feed my weather data into the
UiView system providing a way can be found to do so.

Seasons Greetings to all

Peter (G8ZQA)

Have you tried calling Davis directly?
They have helped me with similar issues and have Hams on staff.

You might get more answers if your try the yahoo! TM-D710 group!

I would not think that you can get any wx file suitable for UI-View
through the WX station/D710 to your computer, but somebody might have
tried and have a good answer.

And, to be totally politically incorrect, as I really celebrate

Peter

Our ARES/RACES group here in Chester County, PA have about 30 DavisPro2 wx stations reporting WX via APRS supporting a WX reporting program the Chester County Department of Emergency Services is sponsoring. Many of our guys use UI-View to see the local APRS WX data from the Davis stations.

Our group opted to use a BYONICS TinyPack xmit only TNC that accepts APRS wx data from the DavisPro2 wx console to control the radio and get the correctly formatted APRS WX sentence transmitted. The TinyPack interface is an inexpensive way, about 40-50 bucks, to get the Davis data on the air. The TinyPack uses the exact same hardware as the Bynoics TinyTrack but with FIRMWARE specific to the Davis APRS sentence presented by the WeatherLink APRS Streaming Data Logger.

While I have not interfaced my DAvisPro2 to a TMD710 I am sure you will need to purchase the Davis WeatherLink for APRS Data Logger ( Davis Part no. 06540) This data logger has the WX data formatted specific for APRS so that anyone running UI-View or other APRS software can decode and see the WX data. The 06540 has a serial only APRS format. Davis has other data loggers, including a USB version I do not believe the data stream is structured for APRS.

If you need further info you can contact me off-group at jvilardo@verizon.net

You can feed the Wx data into UIView without any hassle all you need is
the the little add on programme for weatherlink, radio, TNC and of
course computer. If you want I can email it to you.

cheers

If your looking for USB adaptors, try this company. I have purchased several from them and have never had an issue with anything not working properly.

I also buy all my cables from them.

The subject of USB adapters has come up many times and anything with the
FTDI chipset seems to be a good bet.

However, you normally cannot find out what chipset it uses until you
actually plug it in (or open it) and see what drivers it loads!

Perhaps not a bundle of help, but might point you in some direction.
