Ron.. Yep sending ?APRS? as a message is entirely different as you have
noticed. In Uiview you can use F11 to do a query all stations. In Xastir you
can find a Query All stations in the Messaging menu. I often use a dumb
terminal with a TNC in converse mode and just type ?APRS? . This works fine
.. Just make sure you have the path set properly with
UNproto APRS via WIDE2-2 or something similar.

When I say I use a dumb terminal with a TNC in converse mode there are a
couple of different programes like WIN-TNC and AGWs Terminal which work with
AGW-PE and emulate a TNC in converse mode very well.

Tony,

OK, now I understand how it works, thanks.

Tony,

You are absolutely correct! Thanks!

The F11 function in UI-View makes all our UIDIGI systems respond as expected. I had always tried the directed message query with my D700 by sending a message and it never worked, but your comment caught my attention. I tried it and was instantly convinced that UIDIGI indeed responds to a general ?APRS? query.

However, there are two types of queries. They are the general and the directed message query. UIDIGI supports the general ?APRS? query, but it does not support the directed message query. After reading the APRS specification is defined that a ?APRS? query is defined as a general query and it is not specifically stated to support a directed ?APRS? message format query. I did not realize this. Although, some APRS software packages support a directed ?APRS? message query like UI-View.

Thanks,
