On the subject of the Official Secrets Act.

My father was in charge of a group making Rolls Royce engines during WW II
but never talked about it for the rest of his life, he died in 1967.

My Grandfather was in WW I. He never discussed that either. We just
assumed that he was 'up to his neck in muck and bullets' as they used to
say.

I was slightly puzzled by the fact that he could speak fluent, regional
German and, later, when I did some sums I worked out that he was too old
to be called up in 1914. So what did he do. He died about the same time as
my father but he was 93, a lot older.

Of course, as you will know, you are neot even supposed to tell people you
have signed the Act but you stop caring.

This takes me back to an event about 20 years ago. A friend of mine had
just got his degree and been put on the 'Fast track' for employment. He
showed me a form full of questions, making up an application for MI 5.

Atthe bottom, it said that, if selected, he must not mention he was in MI
5 to any friends or family member, not even his wife.

The final line amused me. Do not show this form to anyone or mention the
contents.

Now that should have been at the beginning :-)
