I have yet to find a universal remote which is not a severe compromise on what
was available on the original controls for my equipment. I use a 8x universal
one for the living room which has - plasma TV, digital STB and home theater.
It has a total of 41 buttons + the 8 for telling it which item to control. I
have it set up for just the basic functions of these because it doesn't have
nearly enough buttons to cover all the functions without having to resort to
printing a translation list and even using that it would still not have enough
buttons. My home theater's own remote has 58 dedicated buttons. I never even
got around to setting it to control our satellite system or the audion system.

I basically have it set it so the most used functions are able to be
controlled under the main TV option button. As in pressing volume up/down
adjusts the home theater; pressing channel buttons alters the STB.

So I use the universal for the most part, then seek out the original remote
for the less usual functions. The universal one I use doesn't actual have any
buttons as such, it uses a touch screen. Probably its best feature is the fact
that with one press of the 'All Off' button it all comes one and all goes off.

My ideal would be a universal remote in which the button are labelled via an
LCD display, so that they can change depending upon what you have set it to
control.
