Has anyone heard about this new Hyperloop rapid transport
concept, which they claim will shoot along at a top speed of
1300km/h, and get you from San Francisco to Los Angeles
 in 30min.

It has been described as a cross between a rail gun, the
concord, and an air hockey table. It will supposedly
consist of aluminium pods going through steel tubes. The
pods will have an air compressor that generates lift,
something like a hovercraft, and avoids the "syringe" effect
where the pod is trying to compress the air in the tube in
front of it. Linear motors are used to propel the pod through
the tube.

I guess it is still in the concept stage, but when I think of
the discussions that come up from time to time for a high
speed rail link between Sydney and Canberra, and with the
predicted costs of the Hyperloop being just 1/10th of the
Cost of conventional high speed rail links, it sounds like
this sort of technology sounds like just what we need.
