Hi Ian and all,
Yeah, that ohm meter and LED thing whacked you up side de haid too, a diode
is a diode is a diode when it comes to passing current only in one direction.
Then things get complicated when you test conductance, sometimes siemens
tells you more than ohms, don't ask how or why, I don't know. It goes back to
the days when I repaired juke box amps, hybrids and early solid state had DC
volume controls, noise free and the pot can be mounted remotely under the bar
so the barman could control the volume without going over to the box. Anyway,
control was accomplished with a full wave diode bridge biased through a
transistor, one day I found an amp with a signal that got up to the diodes
and stopped cold. Funny, the diodes all check good, control voltage OK,
everything works but the amp is dead as a door nail. Did you ever get one of
those hair pullers that bug you to no end? Well, I fiddled around with a new
digital VOM trying to get used to this new technology and it was an odd one,
it had an extra function, conductance. Eh? Anyway, I must have left the
selector on mhos (no siemens yet) and once again tested the diodes, one read
way differently than the other three. I replaced it and VOILA`it works!
Oh that wonderful RC timing circuit, a simple relaxation oscillator. Seems to
me you're confusing an LED with a neon lamp, an LED flasher uses a 555 timer
chip and driver since forward breakover is only 0.2V and they usually operate
from a sincle 1.5V cell. That RC timing circuit works great with an NE-2 or
similar lamp because they have a 60V firing potential and generally are
powered in the 90-150VDC range. My one and only CB noisemaker was a dual
relaxation oscillator, essentially two in series powered by a 90V B battery.
Remember A, B and C batteries? No, not cell sizes, filament, plate and grid
bias. (;->) One was low frequency, essentially a flasher that charged a cap
when it fired, the high frequency tone generator was powered by the cap. At
full charge tone was high, then dropped as the cap discharged, then the low
one fired and started the cycle again. Playing around with different R and C
values varied the tone and rate, it sounded similar to the heat ray sound
effect in War of the Worlds (1953 ?) starring Gene Barry. FYI that boinging
sound was hitting a tower guy wire with a wrench.
"Congratulations Warren - have a new licence."
Sarcasm I'm sure (;->) but that comment reminded me of how some on a scanner
radio forum would argue and put me down thinking I don't know what I'm
talking about because I hold a Technician Class (entry level) ham license.
What, do I have to hold an Extra to inpress your walnut sized brain? I
started with electricity when I was 7 years old and went from there, the long
and short of it is you don't know me, pal, so who are you to judge? Sometimes
I don't know if I should laugh or cry but such remarks always get a face palm.
Say the magic woid and win a duck.
