VHS tapes are still being made, its just not profitable for the
high-street shops to sell them.

A -RW or +RW DVD disc MUST be finalised to play on a different player, IE
a normal DVD player or a computer. An un-finalised DVD will only replay on
the machine it was recorded on. Un-finalising a RW disc only takes a
couple of mins.

PVR's (in the UK they are called Freeview+ boxes for terrestrial use or
freesat+ for satellite use [or Sky+ for subscription people]) are gaining
ground in the UK, as people realise how easy they can be to use. Some
record 2 channels at the same time (and you can normally play a previous
recording at the same time as well!). The EPG (electronic programme guide)
make it a "point and click" type of job to program your weeks viewing and
most also offer to record an entire series of a particular show just by
clicking on the YES option when asked.

My new PVR does know where I stopped viewing a programme and asks me if I
want to pickup playback from where I left it or start from the beginning.
Jumping through the recording to bypass the commercials is simple with
many speeds to FF and REW the recording.

It all depends on the software that the manufacturer has programmed into
the box. And updates are transmitted over the air. If you cant wait, some
even allow you to get the update from the manufacturers web site, put it
onto a USB memory stick, plug it into the PVR and in a few minutes you
have the latest version installed. Thats what I did and it fixed the bugs!

Some PVR's also allow you to copy a recording onto an external USB hard
drive to keep. Who needs tapes (or discs) now!
