I just purchased a new Panasonic VCR, with surprisingly digital and
analogue tuners. It has all the facilities of a stop box, TV program
selection etc.
So although having some old VCR tapes I thought I would start it off by
buying some new ones. Only to be told by the sales person that they are no
longer made. Not believing him I tried Dick Smith and about 4 other shops
to be told they don't stock tapes and are unobtainable.
Actually this new VCR, substitutes very well and better in some ways,
than most of the PVR's (personal video recorders), that utilize hard
drives and some come with DVD burners.
We have 3 TV's/vcr's in the house and we sometimes use the old VCR's to
record 3 different shows, that occur on the same date and time. This is a
common ploy of most TV stations to collide good prime time programs, so as
the get listeners to their channel!
OK we then take the tapes from the other machines and at our leisure,
look at the colliding shows, or maybe keep a tape for posterity. Now
how would you do that with a PVR? i.e. cant take the hard drive out and
plug it into the main one. Ok says the salesman just burn DVD's on the
other 2.
Yes I said, but do I then through it away? Oh he said, you could use a
re-writable disc. But I said one has to finalize the disc to play it and
then if I need to use it again, I have to format it!
What a lot of trouble compared to a VCR tape. I think progress with
digital has not included ready copying of shows with interchangeable
media. Also re the unavailability of tapes, I would say that probably 75%
of folk have not purchased a costly PVR.
Also with hard drives. memory sticks and DVD's. If you get to watch half
a show and switch off to watch the rest the next day, these force you to
start from the beginning of a show and one has to fast forward it to where
you left off before! Not so a tape!
So I am wondering if anyone has a good answer to this dilemma please?
