I'd never thought about it like that - It's possible, I suppose although 
that's a bit like taking my mountain bike, fixing a hairpin piece of 
carboard on the frame, jamming it in the spokes and calling it a motorbike!

The FT-857 wins on consumption, my ability to program it and the fact that 
the mic/head connectors are readily available.  But I am steering towards 
the 706 Mk2G.
