I've read about the mod to enable the fan to run continuously, but 
obviously that's a trade-off re: consumption.  I had taken 
into account the heat issues but I think perhaps a continuous fan (and a 
healthy radio) is more important than eating into the 
supply of a lead-acid battery.

Oh yes, easy peasy - Been there/done that with the remote kit for the 8900 
and 8800 radios.
