Most of the current seems to be used by the display illumination, turn the
brightness down and it cools down and the consumption also goes down.

I think that was mostly due to the cooling fan starting and stopping. Adjust
it to run the fan slow all the time and it improves.

I think you can make up the lead yourself - you just need the plugs, cable and
crimper.
