I remember my local libary having one attached to a rather ancient (I think
a 1640) computer running an orange screen where you "scanned" your library
card and it told you what books you had borrowed and if you wanted to
reserve a book, you could. This was 92-94 during my first few years of
secondary school.

Doubtful if it's still there as I haven't been in there for a number of
years. I know Detective Goren says that the library card "is his most
useful detective tool" but I have Google, Wikipedia and G3ZHI.
