Apparently there was a bull recently which gave a link to where free books
and reference manuals can be downloaded. I've no idea who sent it out, but
many thanks to him, whoever he is. For anyone who - like me - might
have missed the link to the site, it's here:

www.tech-systems-labs.com/books.htm

I missed it, but Mel, G4WYW, pointed it out to me as he was so impressed
with some of the stuff on there, such as the United States Navy Electronic
Training Course.

It' a full course, NOT scanned - made for cd by the Navy. 24 modules 4100
pages. The manual is reproduced in full - all 24 modules, but you can
download only those that you want.

The quality is perfect.

You can use pdf search to find anything on each document. It has questions
and answers in each module. In the public domain, and you can delete the
first few pages of each module if you want to, so as to combine into one
4100 page course.

Of course, it has to be said right away that the books are "free" only in
the sense that you can download them and store them on your PC for free.

In the unlikely event that anyone wished to print off the US Navy Manual
it would take more than 8 reams of paper, and who knows how many ink
cartridges.

But that's not the way to use e-books - you read them on screen,
and if you want to print anything off, you do it selectively.

There are many files of interest to radio amateurs - trouble-shooting
Tektronics oscilloscopes, data on ICs. For example:

Amateur Radio Handbook 1959: In its day, this was a bigger seller than
the ARRL Handbook. Full 810 pages in pdf format (size 60 meg), unrenewed
copyright:

I was especially impressed with the book "Crystal Sets to Side-Band" by
Frank W. Harris K01YE This is not scanned it is made for pdf. Full colour,
and runs to 372 pages.(just over 4MB).

It covers everything from crystal sets to sideband, as the title suggests.
Lots of basic and not so basic theory, well-illustrated throughout with
diagrams and photos, lots of stuff to interest QRPers, home-brew projects,
techniques and so on.

A really good read. Find it here:

http://www.tech-systems-labs.com/books/CRYSTAL-RADIO.pdf

Obviously you need a decent broadband connection to download some of the
larger files, but that's another topic altogether! (I downloaded the 60MB
1959 Amateur Radio Handbook in under 20 minutes).

Many thanks to Mel for pointing me in the direction of the website.

Best wishes
