The Free DYNDNS service , which includes the .ath.cx domains needs to be
refreshed by the holder at least once per month. The service is meant for
dynamic IP addresses and when a router senses a change in IP address then
the router (all by itself and no manual periodic intervention) will
inform DYNDNS of the change and the 1 month period is started again.
If you have cable broadband in the UK, although in theory it is a dynamic
IP address, in practice the IP address rarely alters. This is a lot
different to ADSL where the IP address can alter quite often unless of
course you have a static IP address.
I believe that the UK BBS that you have been using is on Cable, and as
such the IP address will rarely alter. If a manual refresh hasn't been
done by the Sysop then the .ath.cx domain name will expire after 1 month.
There is also a PAY service with DYNDNS where the domain name does not
expire after 1 month but like most BBS sysops ( me included ) I am
unwilling to meet that expense.
There are 2 alternatives that you can use.
Firstly YOU could PAY for the swap to the paid service (8-((
or
Secondly you could make a note of the IP address associated with the .ath.cx
domain name and use that to connect to the BBS instead of the .ath.cx
domain name when that has expired.
I hope that further clarifies your understanding of the situation.
