greetings Matt and anyone following this forum

Well first I must say for someone who is new to packet you have certainly
got your head around it very quickly. With a solid understanding of net/Rom
BPQ AXUDP and Linux is a very impressive repertoire. i will take it that
your backround is IT?

My PC skills are somewhat limited and i found BPQ almost impossible to
understand and ditched it very early in the efforts to get back on packet.

My comfort zone has always been PC based and while i had tried Red hat
Linux many years ago still found bridging the gap from one system to the
other too difficult in the time frames that were available to me.

Hence Dos and Windows are easy for me to use and i feel comfortable with
that enviroment.

So moving to a virtual based system was very easy for me to achieve and
the results are eactly what i was hoping to achieve. From what i can understand
Linux has come a long way since the early Red Hat days and i am yet to have a play
with it but eventually would like to migrate the BBS over to that format as a base
backbone system as no mater what windows is it will never be able to have the up
times that can be achieved with linux.

I would ask if it is at all possible could i call apon you to setup a forward
with the new virtual machine as it would further help in my testing??
i will have to map some ports and am goiing to have to get my head around that
first but does not hurt to ask ;-))

I was interested to hear that you are using NEtBooks as i think they are a
wonderful creation and perfect for my kind of PC experiementation. i am typing
this on one right now, and have 3 units to play with.

i will ask as a novice with Linux should i decide to setup a bbs on this
platform what would you recomend i use? Unbuntu seems quite user friendly
but you may know of a better option?

The next part of my project is to have an RF port on the virtual machine and
i am fasinated with what you mention rxecho? As for the same purpose i have
enabled a USB to serial adaptor and set it up on windows 2008 server as com 1
and also enabled com 1 in the virtual machine. i will have a spare TNC in the
next few weeks and hope to setup a radio port on the virtual machine using com1
and host mode as the tnc interface.

As i said i fine BPQ impossible and will not even attempt using it to avoid
total confusion.

AX over UDP is totally confusing enough as for the life of me I will never
understand why anyone would possibly want to use ax25 over udp?

As UDP ports are noting more than black holes.

And the first to be canned when traffic loads get too high, Utube
is a very good example of this as movies simply wont play when the demand is too
great.

Ok enough waffling from me for now but with out spedning many hos typing a quick
explanation of rx echo would be appreciated.
