greetings all

As most of you will be aware cloud computing is certainly here to
stay and i guess one way or another most of us have used cloud
computing in our daily lives.

Possibly without even being aware of it.

I have several objectives in resuming my interest in packet radio
and the first was to get back up and running again.
With the help from a few dedicated hams this has happened and i
now have more of a handle on what is going on than when i first started.
Although i didnt think it would be too tricky at the time.
But soon learned the pit falls of trying to run old software on todays
modern hardware.

It would appear on the surface now that i have all the possible bugs
ironed out, so i felt it was time to look into cloud computing for
the purposes of running a radio/telnet BBS.

There are many reasons for doing this although for myself as i
already had a server at home running 24/7.
I could not see why I should have to run another machine just for
packet radio. When i had one with processor time going begging and
enough rescources to run 3 virtual machines from the one server.

So in the last few days with a little extra time up my sleeve i
decided to enbark on the next step and that was to setup a virtual
machine on my server and to install fbb ver 700i onto the virtual machine.

My server is a HP Proliant Mini Server with a solid state hard disk
for the operating system and 8 gigs of ram with dual AMD processors.
It is what i referr to as my "poverty pack server" although i have
8 trabites of storage which is fast being gobbled up.

The OS on the server is Windoze 2008 Server R2 and to setup a virtual
machine in the server i used the resources supplied with the OS
rather than have to purchase a copy of VM Ware.

Hyper V is a sort of poor mans equivalent to VM Ware however it is
very simple to use and i had a 32 bit version of Wondoze 7 installed
in no time followed by a clone copy of my winfbb setup with all ports
working etc.
i am currently forwarding with it from the Wormhole bbs and will add
a tnc and radio in the next few weeks.

I would be interested to hear from other hams doing similar things
with virtual machines and Packet radio.
As the main advantage for this is to have one pc do the bulk of the
work as most of the time the poresssor time is just sitting idle.
Not to mention the cost saving to run just one PC 24/7.

i will send another post with my progress in a few weeks once i have
it running on all ports as if successful i will migrate my wormhole bbs
across to this platform once it has proved its worth.

kind regards Tubby VK4TUB
