Hi all, the big problem now with packet is - not many bulletins are being
generated from all parts of the world [especially in English], plus very very
little of interest - in what is being generated as bulletins.
Most sysops of latter years just put G * for "send bulletins forwarding to
BBS callsign"; Instead of interest areas, such as VKNET, etc. So we get a lot
of crap and foreign languages stuff, etc.
One of the biggest problems has been users & sysops, complaining of other sysops
trying to solve problems. We still have them. We also have new commers who do
not understand new methods of forwarding.
Plus most sysops treat their BBS as sole & priority of use for the packet
network. I look at bulletin forwarding as secondary, and the user as number
one. The packet network should be primarily catered for the user - example,
the use of AXUDP or AXIP links between Nodes and BBS's, so users can easily
go to other nodes - to find out what is happening. Sysops that are using
Telnet only - are restricting their users from fully use of the packet network.
Packet demised in Australia because of the packet wars & circuits being
loaded by BBS use. Also clubs are falling apart. But USERS must be remindered
that SYSOPs do not sit beside their BBS's and NODES all day - we have medical
appointments, travel a lot, etc etc. We rely on our USERS to tell us if a
problem is occuring.
The real question is -
How do we fix the problems of today; Yes you can be a ney sayer or stick your
head in the sand, or critize the messengers. But let us all bring forward
new ideas - Paula G8PZT is one of the few packet developers left in the
world - lets give her ideas to develope new systems so we can use them. Let
us all not be DESTRUCTIVE and bring any new idea down. If you see a bulleting
on a new idea, dont boo boo it - but make a constructive article.
After working for the old ARPA & Rand Corp in the mid sixtes on packet systems
[not for amateur radio, but space usage] I am convinced that we will come
out of these doldrums and sore to greater heights.
We only have XR32, XS32, BPQ32 & BPQMail being developed at present - If you
are a retired Computer Science Lecturer from a University or just a plain old
programmer - Please support the cause.
A few suggestions - More articles on all Antennas; DSTAR packet integration;
Cut your bulleting down to less that 4K, or cut them up into parts of less
than 4K; High Speed usage on packet; Email to packet, Packet to Email etc;
CHAT usage between systems [ie Linux converse to BPQ32 Chat & XR32 Chat];
Why use Winmore, or other packet systems;
I believe that no station should be a center point for country, Chat, etc
packet entry - The more the more inovations will occur.
