Yes @vk etc are gone and who cares? Here in VK2 we only have about 5
packet users and many BBS's are gone.
There is nothing of real interest for the average ham to know about,
resulting in so few bulletins, so the more we can see the better.
Even personal mails are most often sent as bulletins @www for
reliability.
Also true PNL's can be read by most, as with the majority using
internet-Telnet, it gives users, BBS privileges, so what! To the shock
horror, of old purists, running BBS's, who think only sysops should have
that privilege!
Also these days, few if any sysops read their mail or bulletins and time
and again, I have sent an email to a sysop telling that he has a message
or his BBS is down!
Overall ham radio is in the doldrums and here although we have a
multitude of good voice repeaters, they go unused for 99% of the time. It
made me comment to an ardent club, voice repeater builder, that his club
consists of 2 groups the repeater builders and the rest of the club, who
don't use them.
Actually I feel packet radio is the greatest user of spectrum with data
flowing constantly from those few sysops that run unproto, etc RF.
Another conundrum for me and old timers, is the great number of
foundation calls issued, but never to be heard on air. It seems to me that
only nets and a contest will entice most hams to use their hobby and one
wonders if we can justify so much band space.
