Hello Ian, and others, who no doubt have read, that Tony VK3API
is following the route of other Sysops of the world, and well
with the "radio" outta the way another nail in the coffin....

Our local packet users, belonged to a "club" where the club sponsored
the packet and repeater ,APRS systems as a whole, with one member
acting as sysop and using the club callsign...etc.
Some were better then others, and it seemed the location changed but
two times, beore dieing, with a flimsy excuse. We currently here
have I guess from where I sit, only 2 stations or nodes for a BBS
and other services, if one can have patience for the automated Pressto
I'll rescue you whatevers signging in and out every 10 minutes for
email via the local RMS.
I know of NO independent owned Packet system coming from the home of
the operator/owner...only those on commercial sites and belonging to
clubs now ...but dieing.

Sure it is, because at the last meeting I went to, and even now, all
the chatter is how to make Internet more of the Hammie hobby. Why?
They have removed the "radio" from packet...why have a licence?
Computer this and that, and Internet...and well I ended up the "only"
user on one BBS, where the club might well be called a Internet club
now then a Ham Radio Club.

There was a lot more to Trevor M1CHUK and his situation, other then the
costs of his ISP and all.

Yes I remember reading that after I first suggested people or a club
taking over his system ...or sending donations....and I heard the
reasons why, and also that other sysops too might cause a rumpest
if this happened. I also heard from Trevor on my posting.

Sending money Internationally is easy. I have done that. Also
let it be known that for other sysops with problems, I know of
One sysop here in Canada, that got help from Trevor ,in the form
of equipment for his packet station to keep it on-air.
YES there was a International Help system, but not really organized
to be helpful, and "ok" lets say it was going, and Tony VK3API
was in need of "..................." and justified....BUT then
whats to stop someone else abusing the system we had setup this one
time ... As I do remember appeals for "ca$h" or "Equipment" or both
by some call via an email message.... but then that was that...

Exactly ... many do, then there are those who are fake...

I am all in favour of an International Help System for Packet Sysops
to keep them on .."ca$h" "equipment" or both. I see this stuff at
fleamarkets and also obtainable FREE, or even donated to such a system
but then how to administer it, and then as with so many Sysops who
are owner/operators and their BBS is private, we must look at health
issues they face, and then think with local users and their input
how much to buy the system off the owner, and re-location.
NO one cares about the health of a Sysop ... they only call if the BBS
or whatever is off ... not to see if he/she is "ok".
I am glad Ian you support your local BBS sysop owner/operator as one
day he/she will be the only thing left between the final nail and life
of packet.
I have an email about packet forwarding via HF from a station, many miles
away. As you know the antenna is down here, and well last time it
wasn't ham help to put it up but local CB'ers here who have an interest
in their community. When I am ready, these folks are coming back to
do it again, and some are interested in my ideas...so we'll see about
me sysoping a HF packet source or not ... as I too am with medical
problems, and I have had to tell all about these so I am not a future
problem ... We'll see.
I know what Tony VK3API faced and his costs too, as a sysop and also
paying registrations fees for this and that...to make things better
for users....but then comes the crunch...and users must either want
to keep it going, or see it die.
Thnaks for your posting, It brought back memorys, as well the sad day
from a close friend of Trevor to hear he had died. That hurt so much.
Funny thing in the past via packet, Trevor and I didn't seem to be
friendly to each other in postings, but once I emailed him and we settled
our differences...he became a very very sincere close friend, I miss
so much to this day.
