When I started on packet, it was all RF and the BBSs were suported by the
Packet User Groups in each area. E.G. I was in the NWPUG (North Western
Packet User Group).

Witht he rise of Telnet connection and the fall off in radio users, it
became harder for sysops to run their BBSs.

At one point, the late Trevor, M1CUK said that he was going to have to
close down due to an increase in price by his ISP.

I sent him the normal amount of money that I used to send to NWPUG. Then
about that time David,G4EBT (he's not ALL bad) put out a bulletin
suggesting that we all send an annual cheque to Trevor, which a lot of
people did. It meant that trev could carry on.

I know that sending money internationally is a lot more complicated than
sending an annual donation locally but VK3API must have local users who
could form a PUG. The rules say that, because being a sysop is an amateur
hobby, it is illegal for sysops to charge but there is nothing against
donations from individuals or groups.

We are not all thoughtless users who couldn't care less about our sysops.
I used to send UKP 10 every November to my local PUG as well as donating
the odd bit of equipment like an unwanted 2m rig and a 70cm beam to my
local sysop. I know that a lot of others did the same thing.

It sounds as though other countries do have PUGs, nonethe less, I hope
Tony stays around. Just as a user.
