Hello friends
Unrelated to Shortwave Radiogram, we had some excitement the early morning of June 14. About 3:00 am, I heard a commotion in the house. It involved our cat Ollie. He was chasing a moth, I assumed. Gazing into the darkness: that's a big moth! Soon I realized it was a bat, flying around our bedroom.
I woke my wife to inform her of our visitor. The bat flew around the room in that slow-speed bat style, buzzing both of us, coming within inches, but expertly missing us each time. Bats are amazing flyers.
I like bats and am used to bats in the neighborhood and on camping trips. So I wasn't terrified by the bat in our bedroom. But I was moderately unnerved. My wife had the good suggestion to close the door of the adjoining bathroom when the bat flew in there. The bat obliged, I closed the door, and thus it was sequestered.
We called the Arlington Animal Welfare League, who sent Animal Control Sgt. Ballena at 5:00 am(!). We expected him to have netting covering his face, but he just wore gloves. After a few minutes, the bat was captured and taken away. Sadly, the bat had to be killed and test for rabies. We found out today that test was negative.
So how did the bat get in to the house? All the windows were closed because of the air conditioning. We assume it came through the chimney. There are critter caps at the top of the chimney, but when daylight came, I discovered a crack in the flue tile. Repairs for that are scheduled for July. In the meantime, the fireplace is sealed with duct tape.
