Shortwave Radiogram, Program 328

Hello friends

Thank you for your patience during last weekend's repeat broadcast, necessitated by some travel.

Arabic text this weekend. The Israel Hamas war has resulted in a complete communications blackout (no internet or cell phones working) in Gaza. Residents of Gaza, and some international broadcasters, are rediscovering radio as a medium for essential information. The Shortwave Radiogram concept is that radio (shortwave or medium wave) can be used for text and images, thus partly filling in for the internet that becomes unavailable during times of war and other disasters.

One of the news items in this weekend's Shortwave Radiogram is about BBC Arabic resuming medium wave broadcasting to the Levant from Cyprus. Those MW transmissions had ended in 2019. Following the BBC news item is an excerpt of Arabic text from the BBC. This demonstrates that the BBC could transmit text and images from that Cyprus relay, in addition to its conventional voice broadcasts.

If the Arabic text shows in your Fldigi receive pane as boxes, or something like that, copy those boxes and paste then into a word processor. The correct characters might appear. They will look something like this, printing right-to-left ...

North American time change. This Sunday, November 5, weekend is the change back to Standard Time for most of North America. WRMI on its 9955 kHz frequency keeps its schedule pegged to Eastern Time, so by UTC the Sunday transmission of Shortwave Radiogram will change to 1530-1600 UTC. Other Shortwave Radiogram broadcasts on WRMI stay with their UTC times.

WINB on 9265 kHz also sticks to Eastern Time. This will first affect Shortwave Radiogram on November 9/10 when the Thursday 2330-2400 UTC transmission changes to Friday 0030-0100 UTC (still Thursday evening local time in the Americas). The "Friday night" show changes to Saturday 0330-0400 UTC.

The Shortwave Radiogram schedule for this weekend is provided below.

A video of the previous Shortwave Radiogram (program 327) is provided by Scott in Ontario (Friday, October 20, 1300-1330 UTC). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. Analysis is provided by Roger in Germany.
